Yet for decades, specialists have used a technique that is almost tailor-made for the problem. With undersea gear that resembles the ultrasound machines in medical offices, they measure the flow rate from hot-water vents on the ocean floor. Scientists said that such equipment could be tuned to allow for accurate measurement of oil and gas flowing from the well.
Would this gear also take away assets like the ROVs to run and thus take them away from trying to close it (last I heard they were guiding the containment box in it)

I don't think anyone really knows the size of this spill.

That isn't the problem now... lets get it under control then figure out how much was spilled

The equipment is currently on a research vessel and ready for deployment.
They have several different tools to use and they are pricey.
Image analyzers, Video Plankton Recorders, etc..
NOAA called around to various professors last wed looking for this type of equipment to borrow. Several folks at LSU and other universities have the equipment however not the kind for those depths. Last I heard some equipment was being sent in from Ireland.

Tony Hayward, the chief executive of BP, has claimed that his company’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is “relatively tiny” compared with the “very big ocean.”
Massive FAIL. One of the dumbest statements from a CEO that I've ever read.

Actually he is right but yea that was not the smartest thing to say.
And for as how much is leaking no one knows shite. You would have to know the reservoir pressure, the amount gas and water the well is making and what kind of restrictions there is to the flow in the BOP and in the riser.
