Mr Hayward reiterated a promise that BP “will honour all legitimate claims for business interruption”. Asked for examples of illegitimate claims, he said: “I could give you lots of examples. This is America — come on. We’re going to have lots of illegitimate claims. We all know that.”

I see this all the time in my field. The big $ companies have the resources to spin issues and marginalize situations. They have teams of people that have way more time to research the subject and facts than "Joe public" has.They get report their version of the story and plant those seeds so the burden of proof is on the little guy.

I hear ya, my experience is in the IT field. It's been my experience that they're out to protect their bottom line. Collateral damage is not something they expend a lot of time\money\energy trying to avoid.
I'm of course coming from the little guy point of view so i'm a little bitter and jaded.

The good news for businesses and people impacted by the storm is that BP/TO will not be concerned about the bottom line on THIS project, but they know that they need to keep public opinion in favor of offshore drilling to make money in future projects. If they make everyone a fan and everyone sings their praises on how much they took care of them, how quickly they paid people, and how much effort thye put into the clean-up, then I think they still have a chance to continue offshore drilling. However, if they go cheap and piss everybody off, then the public outrage may be too much to keep capitol hill quiet, and offshore drilling could be banned or limited from expansion. I think that they are smart enough to realize that it makes more long-term sense to make everyone happy even if it costs them significantly in the short-term.

His statement is 100% accurate. Many Louisiana citizens have no problem with filing and pursing false claims when the opportunity is there (see just about every natural disaster in the last 15 years). That is not to say that all claims will be false, but there will be plenty of them.

I am amazed BP gives a shite which claims are fulfilled.
the cap is $75 million. They ought to hit that pretty fast.
after that, its going to be on the US taxpayer (some kind of tax break for the fishing industry) or the Louisiana tax payer or the individual.

been there done that
watched neighbors cheat the insurance companies after Andrew,Katrina and Gustav. Got hit by an uninsured motorist and that sucked sheet too. Paying claims to individuals will be a much different story. In a year or two when the spotlight is off of them, they will be handling most of the claims very tough nosed.
Granted they are right, there are more than half of the claims filed will likely be opportunist trying to take advantage of the system.
However there will be many people out there with legitimate loss of business claims.
The problem is not always deciding whether it is legitimate, there will be plenty of people with legimitimate claims but making unreasonable demands.
This spill will keep a lot of the big defense firms going for a while.

Why wouldn't they? Saw a few commercials last night from ambulance chasers looking to cash in.
