VENICE, LA - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is closing commercial and recreational fishing from Louisiana to parts of the Florida Panhandle because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a news release sent Sunday afternoon, NOAA said the closure begins immediately and will last for at least 10 days. NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco says government scientists are taking samples from the waters near the spill to determine whether there is any danger.

The fishing ban extends between Louisiana state waters at the mouth of the Mississippi River to waters off Florida's Pensacola Bay.

Crews have so far had little success stemming the flow from the ruptured well on the sea floor off Louisiana or removing oil from the surface.

The cool thing about this website is that there is a search function that you can use to see if someone has posted a thread about a subject before you do. You should try it sometimes.

Has anybody seen anything on how this is affecting the fish offshore? Do the larger pelagic species just move on? Have there been any large fish kills associated with this spill. I knew a guy that spilled 5k gallons of no. 2 diesel in bayou beouf, and he said the fish were floating up pretty quickly.

Yes, they are responsible for the clean up but we dont know why the rig exploded and who's at fault.

OK, well then to answer your question, I think they're doing a shitty job, along with the gov't.

What I want to know is, why the hell is there not some sort of cap in place for a situation like this?
I'm guessing they were not mandated by the feds, but this makes no sense to me.

BP TOLD THEM TO BLOW UP THAT RIG AND CAUSE ONE OF THE BIGGEST ECOLOGICAL DISASTERS ON RECORD IN THE GULF AND YOU CAN'T TELL ME OTHERWISE CAUSE BP IS A BIG COMPANY AND THEY AREN'T LOOKING OUT FOR LITTLE PEOPLE OR FISH OR SHRIMP OR KELP OR DOLPHINS OR CUDDLY OCTOPI.

Why is it the governments fault? What more could they be doing that would make you happy?

I was carried away in placing blame on people....figured I'd cover mother nature too for creating the oil that we humans so desperately need.

"this" is not the government's fault, but they were a little late to the party, IMO. We should've been burning the damn oil the very next day. Also, they should at least be accountable to some degree for not having a better plan in place.

I hear ya, so what you saying is that It's our fault for needing the oil that BP was drilling for.
