Woods is a space eater. He won't have the stats and doesn't make sacks. He's that Norman Hand/Grady Jackson type player. He needs to bulk up, but could be a good run stopper in a few years.

He's now going to be in an NFL strength & conditioning program. He's going to be gaining some good weight.

I think that is what Chavis wanted him to be, not sure if that is GW's plan for him.
Our team is built to score fast and often. That means our D needs to be attacking as well. I think that all of our DL need to play aggressively up the field as opposed to eating space.
I think that Woods can play next to Ellis, but I also think he will be Ellis' replacement when he takes his annual 4 game injury break.

How long exactly does it take for someone with Woods' frame to add 30 useful lbs (as opposed to just fat)? Seems like he's not going to be of the physique to play 3-tech until 2011 or so.

the good 2-gap DTs are usually pretty fricking fat

Haha yea no shite, you would have to be on some serious amounts of juice to weigh that much and not be fat
Posted on 4/24/10 at 11:47 am to LSUpsychWARD
the only ones who aren't typically fat are the true freaks like haynesworth who are 330 or so and run sub 5.0
those guys are very, very rare and get paid
but hell, even those guys get fat (shaun rogers)

Understood, but his just putting on 25-30 lbs of fat wouldn't be too useful if he didn't somewhat improve his strength in the process.

i think he can play at his current weight, with the goal being to put on that weight over the next 18 months
the saints have drafted 3 project-athletes so far (robinson, graham, woods). i don't know if anyone expects them to contribute at a high level in 2010 or maybe even 2011

The whole point is he needs to get heavier so that he wont get thrown around like Hargrove does when he tries to fill the gap. Sure, it would be nice if he could get stronger to get some push in the running game, but in the passing game we are just looking to create some one on one matchups for Will Smith and Bobby Mccray.

Wow - that's a little harsh to Big Sed, no?

Al Woods never impressed me, but if anyone can do anything with him its our D coordinator. I believe that.

So wait is Al going to be a 3 technique or a 1?
