Your beloved Abita has convinced the state alsohol board to restrict other state's imports into LA--something along those lines.

It's more popular on a national scale than people think too. There are numerous areas of the country that have this on tap...not just big bar places like the bulldog or something...places that have only like 5 beers on tap. Good stuff. Wish we had it here as well...thanks abita.

Beer Wars

It boils down to distribution
there are only so many beers that so many distribution companies can allocate....

there is an age old law enforced on distribution companies on how many beers they can distribute, and they bow down to the big boys

ETA: Find any book by the beer critic Micheal Jackson

Why can't I find Yuengling nationwide?
The Yuengling Brewery is a regional brewer that has manufacturing plants in Pottsville, PA and Tampa, FL. Currently we distribute our products over a ten state area along the eastern seaboard. While there is significant interest for our products nationwide, unfortunately we do not have the manufacturing capabilities to service customers across the United States. As a result, our focus and efforts continues to be on our loyal customers and markets that are logistically feasible to our production facilities.

You might have. It is not illegal for bars in our state to sell the beer. They just don't have any distributors in the region to deliver it or pick it up from. I know Chimes and Port Royal/The Cove will both carry the beer periodically on tap and in the bottle. Just like Fat tire. Expect the Chimes to carry it sporadically over the summer as the owners/managers make beach trips and bring it back with them.

BigAlBR, Are you trying to say that there is some secret board that meets to decide what beer can be sold here? I find that a little hard to believe.
I think Abita would need to worry alot more about the other 3 or 4 in-state brewers as well as Lazy Magnolia.
It seems to be as others have said, a matter of distribution and shelf space. Or possibly that Yuengling just doesn't want to ramp up production now. Same thing I have heard about St. Arnold from Texas.

Welcome to the world of Louisiana politics. The legislature has created a 3 tier distribution system, putting beer sales in the hands of a few. It is money and politics pure and simple. Now bury your head back in the sand.

I've seen it before. I bought all the Fat Tire in the cooler then asked the owner about it. He bought a few cases out of state for himself and put 2 or 3 six packs in the cooler to see how long it would last. I was like the third person in the store after he put in out.

I went to high school about an hour from Pottsville and have some family property up there. Yuengling Porter is a very good beer.

I understand completely that the distribution is in the hands of a few folks, but I see all kinds of oddball beers around town that someone is working the system to get in.
I have to believe that the beers that the Avenue Pub and Steins Deli are getting in aren't part of the regular "approved" list and aren't part of traditional distribution, but they are finding ways to get it in and sell it.

It is definitely illegal for bars or stores to sell beers that are not distributed in their areas or states. That is why the three tier systems are soooo dumb. A bar cannot purchase and then sell beer that they acquired by any other means than through their distributor. The Chimes, Cove, etc are bringing in that beer illegally from Texas, FL or other states.

I am surprised that they have not been busted yet. they are advertising that they have beer that you cannot legally get in LA. I am not addressing the Abita rumor, just saying that no distributors carry Russian River, yet Avenue Pub has a tasting with those beers?

Of course you are going to find other beers, but simply realize that the owners went and got it, rather than having it brought to them. Beer distribution is a big, state controlled, highly taxed form of socialism. They are, in essence, controlling what the good people of LA drink and how much of it. It sucks, but it happens.

InBev, for as bad as they are, have clout. They have distribution deals with a lot of the micro brews and imports that you see on their shelves. They agree to take them on, bundle it with their Budweiser LA distribution deal, and rake money off the top. Ever wonder why a 6 pack of micro brew from out of state costs 10 bucks?
