I'm a senior in high school trying to finally make my college decision. I've asked on here about majors before. I've looked around at other options like UChicago and Tulane, but I've narrowed it down to LSU and West Point. Pretty torn for a variety of reasons, but right now I'm leaning slighly towards USMA. I know it's a Top 50 Public business school, but I was just wondering how much success any LSU business school grads on here have had in the job market or in grad school. Any information is appreciated.

Well said.

FWIW I may just ask the OT to make the decision for me.

Econ undergrads are worthless outside of the ivy league, FWIW.

Its more about the person getting the degree, than the degree itself.

Economics is a pretty weak degree by itself. You have to pair it with either business or math for it to add some value.

There are way too many factors involved in choosing between the two schools you listed. Honestly, none of us can give you a legitimate answer without knowing you, your goals, and your family enviroment.

Major in Finance. Anyone who's done it will tell you it was worth it. Anyone who hasn't will tell you they should have.

A close second would be accounting.

I'm assuming you want to make a lot of money. Economics is not the way to do that. Plus, aren't those guys wrong 9 times out of 10?

Just my two cents.

So your degree is worthless?

The OP should come to LSU to show Greenspan how to stroke in softball. His swing needs some serious work.

OP: As everyone has said, Econ is worthless. An Accounting/Finance degree is the complete opposite, and as an added bonus, you won't go insane in pursuit of said degree.

As Lynx said, none of us can give you advice without knowing everything about you. And everything about you is bound to change over time anyway, so none of us can give you a right/wrong answer.

As far as the job market, the regional market is pretty solid for LSU business grads, particularly those who get the most out of their education. I went through the CIA program (and I did it for fun, I'm such a moron ). Pretty much everyone in it got internships and eventual jobs. The few who didn't either didn't want any or were weaklings (and this was true when the job market was at its absolute worst).

I don't know the value of a West Point degree. Some employers might see that line next to your resumé and get hard or something. I don't know how employers work.

But you'll find quite a bit of opportunity at LSU. If you're looking to stay in Louisiana, you can't go wrong with da U.

Depends on goals a bit, but I would say:

Accounting if you want job security and the backbone to all business.

Finance if you want to be able to make the big bucks, but with less job security.

I would rank them as Accounting at 1 and Finance at 2, but that is just me.

A major in Accounting, minor in finance is pretty tough to beat.

This.

If you plan on living in LA, there isn't really a reason to go anywhere other than LSU.

West Point and it's not even close. I'm an LSU alum FWIW

Obviously, there's a huge difference in culture between the two schools. You certainly need to consider the military aspect of West Point. No doubt you will have greater opportunities going to West Point. Not to mention you will develop much better leadership skills at WP.

Its not what you know its who you know when it comes to getting a job a lot of times. I'm graduating next month with a business degree from LSU and I have a pretty good job. It depends on exactly what you are majoring in. For example LSU has the best Internal Audit program in the country (or so they say). Therefore, companies recruit those guys very often. If you stay focused and get into the summer internships as early as possible you can do very well for yourself.

I disagree with the assertion that an econ degree is worthless. It is riskier than a finance or accounting degree outside of the top 20-25 schools or so IMO, but not necessarily worthless. One of my best friends from Tulane has an econ degree. He works at Merrill Lynch in NYC now and was able to land a job at BlackRock straight out of school.

LSU does not allow this. They only allow minor in business if you are non business.

Man, if you want to do something with money, you need to re-consider your choices and go to Chicago. West Point might be one of the better schools in the country, Chicago is one of the best schools in the world. Give yourself 3 semesters to pick a major.

I have an econ degree and while it helps with critical thinking and problem solving it is for the most part useless. I do however have a great job but it isn't in my field of study.

If he got into Chicago, then this choice is easy. Go to UC.
