i dont know what you're laughing at. The dude battled and ate up a much needed six innings. It would have been easier to keep getting shelled and not get through 3.

How is giving up 5 runs in 6 innings simply "eating up innings" and not "Getting shelled".

Sorry but Alsup is not a good pitcher. The only reason he pitched last night was we knew we were going to crush Alcorn's pitching staff.

Ben Alsup Takes a lot of heat from people on here but he did his job last night eating up six innings. Even though it wasn't the best performance he got it done and deserves a little credit

Ok, he deserves a littlecredit. He did do his job, meaning he didn't allow a HORRIBLE Alcorn St. team to score more runs than the Tiger offense could match. He kept the bullpen fresh for the remainder of the week. Having said that....I don't think even the biggest Alsup fan would say that he did a good job & really stepped it up for the remainder of the year. Let's face it, giving up 5 runs to Alcorn St. is NOT something to hang your hat on, especially as an LSU/SEC pitcher. All he proved last night was that he is good enough to stay in a game against a very bad team because his team is offensively good enough to destroy the other team's pitching. Had Alsup gone up against Southern Miss or (heaven forbid) an SEC team, he would not have made it out of the 1st inning. Maybe he is improving, & I am happy for him but in no way, shape, or form does his performance last night lead me to believe that he is ready to become a vital part of this LSU pitching staff through league play (even the reaminder of our midweek games), regionals, & the CWS. I don't know how many more Alcorn States we have on the schedule but from last night's showing, don't get your hopes up on this kid. He's got a long way to go. I wish him all the luck but I have to be a realist.

He gave up 4 runs in the 2nd inning buddy. But came back to pitch 4 more which is what we needed. Therefore my statement implied the shelling occurred in the 2nd inning but didn't continue.

No one said he should pitch against SEC competition.

Ok, but he still isnt a very good pitcher. Why you would call someone a negatiger for that is ridiculous. If you werent very good at your job, I would say you are bad at. No one would think I was nagative. Im just judging him by his performance. Why cant you keep his performance from him as a person seperate? I dont know the kid and dont care. He may be a good person, but he aint a good pitcher.

I chuckled a little bit when I heard he was the starter. My exact thought was: "Mainieri's not taking them (Alcorn) seriously."

Missing the point. The point of this thread was not Alsup's pitching ability. The point was that things started out looking badly and he came back and was able to get through 6 innings.

I agree with you. Plus, Alcorn's defense was just horrible. That is one of the worst teams I've seen play at LSU. In fact, I can't think of another team that looked worse.

After the 2nd...3ip 3h 1er 3k 1hbp 1bb. I would think that would deserve a "way to hang in there Ben" from PM.

We actually had a discussion in the stands during the game relative to the chances of a 5-5A District High School team (Catholic, Central, Denham Springs, Zachary) beating Alcorn St.

I don't think their 2nd baseman fielded a ball cleanly all night. He either fell down or bobbled everything that came his way.

There were three pop-up foul balls that stayed in play and Alcorn didn't even get a glove on them!

I can't understand how either LaSuzzo or Alsup were allowed to take up roster spots. It's not like they were dominant high school pitchers Alsup was 12-6 his last 2 years of HS with an ERA around 3 which lets face it is shite for a college prospect. LaSuzzo was even worse. As tight as the restrictions are for roster spots I can't believe we can't find better arms to fill their spots. I guess Mainieri thought Alsup would fill out and become a more powerful pitcher but 6-3 160 as a 3rd year player, dude must have a tapeworm or something. Put Moffit on his arse.

There is no doubt he improved after the second inning.

ETA: He did what we needed him to do against a VERY BAD team.

I was at the game. To Ben's credit, the strikezone was very small. However, every pitch that he threw for a strike was pounded. He is very below average. If Alsup was pitching for alcorn, they would have lost by more runs.

Ben Alsup and LaSuzzo have POTENTIAL. Alsup is 89-91 with a good breaking ball and change up. He has good stuff but has fallen apart in games. Is he a sophomore? I think he is. He may be a program guy who by the time he's a senior will be a very reliable pitcher. LaSuzzo has struggled with consistency but is 89-91 from the left side. He needs to develop another pitch and throw strikes consistently. He is ONLY a true freshman. There are not many Matty Ott's out there. Louis Coleman struggled early on and now look at him. I say be patient and let's watch our damn strong coaching staff develop these guys. Quit being such an internet hard arse. Probably never even played the game.

lasuzzo is a freshman for one and he also didn;'t give up any runs and did strike out 7 guys last night. he wasn't great or anything but at least he has room to improve

Look who's making the trip to Oxford this weekend. He doesn't deserve this bashing. He's worked very hard to get where he's at, so you guys need to finally give him some love!
