Most important thing for me initially is the chips and salsa. If the salsa sux I'm out
Why? Most places that I've ever been to that bill themselves as "authentic" are Tex-Mex places with mediocre food. Other places that are actually authentic don't have good chips and salsa typically but the food is great.

What about El Limon and La Tiendita in Baton Rouge? Totally not Tex-Mex, but both authentic Mexican food.

El Tepeyac - east L.A.
La Super Rica - Santa Barbara, CA
Monte Alban - West L.A. (just for the stewed goat)
Loteria! - L.A. Farmer's Market
gap
Babita - San Gabriel, CA (overpriced and slightly nontraditional, but amazing for a change of pace but not something i crave.)

no kidding. The quesadillas are not very good. On The Border, on the other hand has great quesadillas and queso dip, and that just screams "authentic".

I have deduced that the problem here is that people don't have a clue what authentic Mexican food is.

Firm grasp of the obvious.

And their are several distinct food regions in Mexico. So there is no one "authentic" type of mexican food.

Kind of my thoughts after reading through this thread. I'll admit I'm not positive what makes a restaurant authentic or not, but in my experience in various cities in Mexico was that all of the salsas I had were more like pico de gallo, and the use of cheese was not nearly as prevalent as the Mexican places around here use.

Yeah, one thing I've often noticed in these "authenticity" type discussions is, there are always a lot more people who think they know what is "authentic" than there are people who actually do.
Personally, I try not to be one to get to wrapped up in whether something is "authentic" or not, especially over and above the consideration of whether it is good or not.
And I surely don't claim to be an expert on what constitutes authentic Mexican. Although, I'm still trying to find a place in La. that acutally constructs from scratch a true black mole sauce, with the whole requisite 25+ or so ingredients necessary to do so.
