I recently watched shutter island and lets say it was out there.. but me and my friend was in a debate on was he really crazy? or was he set up just like the real Rachel?
Cause I see it could be both ways. What do yall think?

and no he wasn't. He just wanted to rid himself of that place knowing he'd get the labotamy

I think he was really crazy.. and the anagram names sealed the deal.
The experiment did work, however, and he chose to continue acting crazy to get the lobotomy

correct. the experiment made him realize the truth, but he faked acting crazy at the end to get the lobotomy.

i just watched the movie. i went away thinking the experiment worked, but he just went back to being crazy. why would he want the labotomy?... honest question.

He couldn't live with the guilt over ignoring how sick his wife was. His ignorance and drinking prior to her snapping and killing the kids forced his mind to create a fantasy world. Once he snapped out of his fantasy land he didn't want to face the world as the person he really was.

look up lobotamy and you'll understand. It pretty much makes you brain dead. He'd sit in a corner and drool on himself all day I'd imagine

i guess im just having a hard time imagining why he would want that 
i watched it online so the quality was bad and i probably missed some stuff. still, i literally was sitting at the computer jaw dropped and all at the last 15 minutes or so of this movie. wow.

He really loved his wife and she was dead by his hand. The blind eye he turned toward her mental state cost him his kids. The quote at the end "Is it better to live as a beast or die a good man" is key here. He knew who he was and getting the lobotomy was his way to "die a good man". Going back into the world and facing everybody with what had happened and what he done would be "living as a beast".

There's no spoiler I told my girl what was going to happen before she went to see it... The previews give it away that he was obviously crazy and that the extra number of people in that place was himself
