If a kid is intentionally held back a year in high school, what does this do to his eligibility?
I've been pretty high on a qb in marble falls, tx since I saw him play this season. He's about 6'2", 185 lbs. He's got a cannon of an arm and he's pretty dang accurate.
I did some work for one of his coaches and found out he's jr age but his dad, the head coach, held him back his fr year so he's just a soph. The kids gonna get a lot of looks but what happens as far as the years go?

Could be wrong, but I also believe, in LA, you must get held back prior to high school. Once you enter high school I think you have 4 years of eligibility.

Used to be true. Now it's 6th grade. You can't turn 19 before September 1st. So if you are going to hold a kid back it has to be in 5th grade or earlier.

i know my family held my brother back in 8th grade so he will be one year older then most kids when he went to high school for football. This was in the early 90's.

My son did k twice as suggested by my wife. She is an educator and believes all boysshould be 1 year behind. If it helps in high school that he turns 18 the end of junior year so be it.

Also he'll have a year of "going out" under his belt so hopefully he'll focus a little better freshman year.

most kids are held back in 5th grade in louisiana because you have 6 yrs of playing time. if you hold your kid back in 7th they would play 3 years of middle school and would only have 3 yrs of high school athletics left

wrong...
Th rules states that you cannot turn 19 before August 31st of your senor year. As far as hold backs, in Louisiana you cannot be held back the after 5th grade, but you can b held back in 5th grade. Any hold-back after the 5th grade deducts from your high school eligibility

I played Five years of Varsity Soccer, without a problem, started in 8th grade. Don't know if that is different than having failed a grade. But yes each state has different rules. Like here in Tennessee we are goverened by TSSAA

Rule in Louisiana: If you fail a grade before HS and then go to HS and do not turn 19 before september 1st of your senior year you are eligible. You only get 8 semesters of eligibility in the LHSAA and that is 8 consecutive semesters which is 4 years. If a kid gets held back he must petition the LHSAA for a ruling on eligibility prior to HS or attend 3 years of HS and then go to a prep school somewhere or to a state that will allow him to play like TX or TN. It just all depends though on if the kid is being held back or legitimately failed the grade. If he failed then he is eligible all throughout HS unless he is 19 before sept. 1 his senior year.

The hold back rule in Louisiana was changed my 7th grade year in 1997-98. I held back that year and had I did it the next year I would have to go a MPSA school or transfer out of state. Like somebody else said though, you can be held back prior to middle school though.

In Louisiana, if your school is labeled K-12th or 6th-12th or basically HS 9th-12th you can play more than 4 years of HS. My senior year, I had a 5th grader on my varsity team and my 8th grade year I started varsity. As long as your school is labeled correctly with that states athletic association you can play varsity at any grade if you are good enough.

If your high school and middle school are on the same campus you can play middle schoolers up. This is not the case in most large schools, but in smaller schools you often find that to be the case with basketball and soccer

Not 100% accurate. They must file their enrollment as a 6th-12th grade school with the LHSAA to be eligible and the second part of that rule is that the middle school and HS are on the same campus.

I know a couple who held back their kid in first grade even though he was passed to second. They had to have a meeting at central office and make their case about whatever. But their real reason was that they didn't want to mess with hold backs later in MS or HS.

They are raising their kid to be a professional athlete...from birth. So far, the kid is very impressive.

How sick is society when you will knowingly hold your child back to have an advantage playing football. No wonder louisiana is last in everything meaningful.
