"And the problem with the (Southeastern Conference) today is that it's better than it was 10 years ago. Not to take anything away from Saban, but when Nick did it, it was easier to do than when Les did it. All the schools in the league have expectations that are so high so that you've got schools paying coaches $3 and $4 million, and they all have better facilities."

Bertman supporting his hire. Shocking.

8-5 and 9-4 seasons are not worthy of $3.95 mil.

Does Skip even know that Saban is back in the SEC, and that he won the SEC and NC in 2009? Wow, I always knew Skip was a shitty AD, but I didn't realize how just plain stupid he is.

I'm pretty sure Nick just did it again this year. Nick winning the SEC and NCG in his 3rd year at Bama kinda kills this argument from Skip don't ya think? Why is it easier for Nick to do it again now yet harder for Les?

He's pretty much speaking the truth. When Saban took over at LSU who in the SEC was dominant besides Florida. Spurier left pretty quick and they went into a few "down" years. LSU started the SEC coach price war. Not until Saban got the big contract did SEC schools start paying that much for coaches. The SEC is a LOT and I mean a LOT better top to bottom now and for the past 4 years.

Everything in the article said by Skip was acceptable and accurate, except this. Though his statement is somewhat true, his deceptive intention to sugarcoat for another isn't.

Nick won in year four at LSU after having to somewhat build a national title winning roster(though won games and bowls the first few years with Dinardo recruits), then again did it in year three at Bama(in this tougher era).

Skip conveniently bypasses that Miles first three years main contributors and starters were Saban recruits, and that as Miles excellently rated recruiting classes became his own starters, there has been a clear line of demarcation these last two seasons in level of play and style..

Notably weaker trench warfare on the OL and DL..and a marked transition from a physically dominant set of lines to a finesse modus-operandi.

Apologistic spin for his hire and guy..and a slight stab at his former sparring mate.

And just why would anyone take advice on hiring coaches or analyzing football outcomes from Stanley "Skip" Bertman?

He should have stuck to baseball and moved on.

Even though Skip is a relative, I'm going to try and keep this as objective as possible

Yes of course he is going to defend his hiring of Miles, he has done good things. But look it seems that Miles has lost the style he had early on and it has come back to hurt the team. It is almost as if the school hired two different coaches.
