Many F-bombs and "bleeps" in movies and TV shows.

Does this irritate anybody else? I have become concerned that many script writers think that 20 F-bombs in thirty minutes of movie footage is funny, or that if everybody says the F-word in a movie that it is cool. The same thing can be said for many TV shows. All the "bleeping" is irritating. I just shake my head. I turned off a movie a little while ago because I heard the F word 27 times in less than 15 minutes, from at least 4 or 5 different people. Do the writers not have a vocabulary?
I have always felt that profanity and vulgarity should be used to build characterization of "certain" characters, to express their individuality (as an offensive person...or for another reason), but, when everybody is "fing this...f that...what the f...," it is just pathetic.

In he end, it's just a word.

Sure, but, when it is used 70-100 times in a movie, the movie seems to be just outcome of an uneducated person who never expanded his/her vocabulary.

It's the way most men talk when in the company of their friends. You may be an exception, but most guys, especially those under 40 cuss like sailors when it's just guys.
In other words, it's realistic.

See, what you did was make a hasty generalization: "Most men...you may be an exception."
I am around MEN all the time. I also served in the USMC. Some men say the f-bomb on a constant basis, but, trust me, "most" men is pushing it.
Now, I tend to associate with more educated people, so I don't hear it as much as I used to. However, even in the USMC, it wasn't a word that just comes out as much as the movies seem to portray it. Now, if it is a movie about a bunch of mean-spirited, Italian gangsters who whack guys for looking in the wrong direction, then sure, I can accept that...
...and what is your explanation about women in movies...???

How old are you?
I'm a professional, well educated and consider myself articulate and intelligent. But when I'm with my friends I sling the F-word around like most people use "the."
I'm 31.

With that said, you educated person, go back to your post and edit your improper sentence structure, use/non-use of commas, and introductory phrases/words.

Yes. Absolutely. So much of it is uncalled for. Guess that passes for humor these days.

Exactly. Raging Bull is a great example of profanity building characterization.
I rented the first season of True Blood a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say that the constant "F-you, Mother F-er, etc." really became off putting.

frick is one of the most used words, so no I don't find it insulting. Its more realistic. Real life is rated R for the most part.

Thank you for seeing what I meant. I don't understand how it can really be considered funny or intelligent. I am not, in any way, saying that people who sometimes use the word are stupid, but if that is a common/frequent word in somebody's vocabulary, then I don't hold that person in high esteem.

Oops. I'm pretty bright. So are most of my friends. Almost all of us are professionals. The word "frick" is used pretty fricking often in a casual conversation. Tomorrow, for example, I'm pretty sure it will be tossed around a ton before, during and after the game. I say frick fairly often. It's just a word. Usually just an exclamation.

It's just a difference in people. Frankly, I think it's pretty pompous and self-righteous of you to look down on others who use the word.
Don't you mean "in any way," professor?

It's a product of your environment, not a product of your linguistic skill.
You don't generally put words in place of obscenities, unless you're one of those tools who says things like "bloody" and "dratted." "frick" is a third arm to more fully express raw emotion, not a failsafe for a rickety brain that can't put another adjective in place of it.

quote:I don't become preoccupied with insignificant things like someone's vocabulary. I certaintly am not going to judge someone's intelligence or education level by the number of times they use the "F-word", that's simply asinine. As far as not holding someone to "high esteem" because they use vulgar language is equally foolish. It all depends where they're using it; if they're using it in front of 1st & 2nd graders, then yeah that's obviously not appropriate. I'm probably wrong about this because, as you said you "tend to associate with more educated people" so I probably can't truly grasp the severity of this issue.

I agree with you. It reflects on the de-evolution of our society , the lack of morals and the embracing of the black culture and all it entails.
