Good pick up by the Jackets. I am kinda surprised Groh would take a step down after being a HC, but I guess no one else was knocking on his door.

Not quite sure about the UGA pickup. Guess we will find out.

Groh didn't seem to have any prospects to be a HC again (and at his age he may not want the hassle of being a head man again). I think he did interview with Parcells this week for the Dolphins DC job. Guess that didn't go well.

I was watching NFL Total Access this morning on the NFLN and they were saying Groh was probably going to go to Miami Dolphins or New England Patriots as their Defensive Coordinator. I find it strange he would go to Georgia Tech and pass up the NFL.

Gotta think the Dolphins passed on him after their interview, don't think there is anyway he turned Parcells down.

Great pickup for us. Apparently the big time boosters (and the whole fanbase in general really) were really behind Kirby. That would be the grand slam, "name", PR hire. But Richt has been high on Grantham all along (his name was one of the first on the Hotboard after the firings) and this guy has a great resume. Better than Kirby's by a mile honestly. People (myself included) might not know a whole hell of a lot about him, but from what I've gathered this is a very good hire. Glad it's over with.

now we'll finally have a D to bail out the O when they have a bad game. It's great times in the Yellow Jacket Nation!

Honestly, I don't know much about him. What kind of scheme will he run. Has he been a DC before?

btw: I know I could look this up myself, but I figure a U(sic)GA fan will probably do more in depth research on their own hire than I will.

yeah I got the impression on the radio that Grantham was his guy. what's the connection there? Grantham hasn't been in college in a while and I thought he was more of a 3-4 guy.

He will likely bring the 3-4 with him cause that's what he's run most of his career. He's worked with such defensive minded names as Frank Beamer, Bud Foster, Dom Capers, Nick Saban, and Wade Phillips. He was the DC for Cleveland for 3 years. Word is he'll bring in Travis Jones (UGA grad) from the Saints with him. That's just speculation though. I'm very excited with this hire.

I have no idea why there was initial interest. In the past 3 weeks there were some interesting articles out on our site though. A rival SEC asst. coach speaking on anonymity said he was familiar with TG and he would be the perfect fit for us. About a week later, Frank Beamer gave an interview talking all about TG. The dude was a full time Asst. coach at VT at the age of 24! He was a GA for one year then got promoted. Beamer just gushed about him. But as for the interest 6 weeks ago, I don't know.

It's now officially official. Richt has issued a press release and a teleconference is set for 5:15.

How is it that much of a difference?

2009 Rush Defense:

Ga Tech: 68th (151.64 ypg)
Virginia: 95th (173.83 ypg)

2009 Pass Defense

Ga Tech: 45th (208.64 ypg)
Virginia: 23rd (184.58 ypg)

2009 Total Defense

Ga Tech: 54th (360.29 ypg)
Virginia: 52nd (358.42 ypg)

2009 Scorng Defense

Ga Tech: 56th (24.79 ppg)
Virginia: 68th (26.33 ppg)

The athletes at Virginia arent that much different than the ones at Tech....not to mention you lost your 2 best defensive players in M. Burnett and D. Morgan

Don't worry about them, they're still celebrating their great win in the Independence Bowl

The UVA O sucked arse, and their D was on the field all the time. The GT O had one of the highest TOPs in the NCAA and our D gave up that many yards.

Plus Groh will just be a DC and not have to deal with all the other HC responsibilities, and he'll have a strong O to rely on and can be a lot more aggressive in his approach.
