Just curious, but why is it automatically assumed Miles was

offered the Michigan job? I understand that Herbstreit came out and made the breaking story that turned out to be untrue, but let's be honest here. I seriously have my reservations believing Les was even offered. Many within the Michigan program claimed he was never offered, and those that follow it closely most often agreed.
Just cause Bertman may have fell for it, doesn't mean he was actually even approached.
That said, it doesn't really matter. I just think everyone assuming Les would even get offered the job now is silly, especially considering he may not have even been offered it last time.

There are supposively a couple of Michigan Alumni who want him

Lester, do you think Les was ever actually seriously considered or offered the UM job in 2007?
Hell, I could see him giving that "Have a nice day!" speech more if he had been told he had no shot!

Some Michigan people swear he was never offered the job. There are still some Michigan people who seem to want him however. Or did. Probably never know the real story

Probably just a lot of hype from Michigan fans or maybe some preliminary discussions....whatever the case it's too late now

Herbie acted on completely unfounded Michigan alum wishful thinking. He blew it, got publicly humiliated, and never admitted his mistake.
Says everything about his character.

"Or did," being the operative phrase.

Bingo - he played Skip like a fool. MI never offered.

Someone should tell Desmond Howard that then because he's the one that told Herby it was a done deal...

he gave the speech in order to shut up ESPN, shut down the rumors and get his team back focused on the game. I have no idea if he had an offer, or not, but the press conference was the right move on his part from a coaching standpoint.

Jesus Christ, you people are pathetic. I'd say it's about time you get the frick over the whole Herbstreit "thing." How that could have possibly offended you at the time is beyond me, but to still be butt-hurt over it an SEC Championship, National Championship, and 2 years later is beyond sad.

The question is: why is it so important to you that the story not be true that you return to an 07 event and seek a discussion of something that "it doesn't really matter"?

I doubt very seriously he was offered the job. It's almost certain there were discussions between his people and their people about it, but no definite offer was likely made.

The reason it blew up was: it was not a committable offer. Seriously. They wanted him to be a candidate and discuss it/interview. His reaction was, it's either mine now or go to hell.

Miles' own agent.

On Friday night, Les Miles had a problem.
While most of the media speculated the Louisiana State football coach was about to jump to the University of Michigan to succeed Lloyd Carr, neither Miles nor his agent, George Bass, had heard from anyone connected to Michigan in any capacity.
Bill Martin, Michigan's athletic director, had received permission Wednesday to talk to Miles after Saturday's Southeastern Conference title game, but had not called to set up a meeting or schedule a phone call.

Miles had no idea if Michigan really wanted him.
So Bass decided to ask.
He said he called Martin's cell phone on Friday and left a message. He just wanted to know where Miles stood.
Then, when he didn't hear back, the agent said he called Martin again.
Can you hear me now?
