...if I am 39 years old, 6 feet tall, weigh 190 pounds, work out 3 days a week and run 2 days a week? I am interested in losing a little fat but keeping my muscle mass or even gaining a little mass. One "calculator" said about 2100 calories per day. Any reliable method out there? Can anyone in a similar situation relate? Thanks a bunch!!!

Damn 2100 calories, you could eat mcdonalds for all 3 meals and probably hit right at 2100 depending on what you order. That seems high.

www.livestrong.com is pretty good at answering the question you asked... it uses your weight, activity level, plus additional exercise to tell you what you should be eating per day to either stay the same weight or lose/gain 1, 2, 3, etc lbs...

eta: should be working now...

not at all; with his height, weight, and moderate exercise, i'm guessing most web calculators would say he should eat around 2000 calories a day to lose weight.

ETA: i use livestrong.com for logging workouts and getting nutritional info. i like it quite a bit.

If you want to lose fat but not weight I recommend that you watch the labels for "fat grams" instead of "calories." If you eat only 1500 calories a day and it's all trash you're not going to lose fat. Of course an immense amount of calories from carbs will also increase fat.

I lift weights and either walk or run every day. When I notice an increase in fat it usually correlates to an increase in my salt and fat intake more than calories.

Go with lower fat proteins like eggs, tuna, chicken and fish. When you eat beef and pork go for lean cuts or take the time to do some trimming on the cutting board.

Stay away from whole milk, ice cream, and go easy on butter and cheese.
