I love scotch but it was an aquired taste...In college I would go to a party with a bottle of jack and I would be lucky to get one drink...switch to scotch and I could take a half empty bottle home....and guess what...no hangover the next morning....that is why I aquired the taste for scotch....because I was a poor college student...but it's now my drink of choice and after 38 years of drinking scotch...I find I have a better taste for Irish whiskey, good burbon and rye...and no I don't attend the meetings...I'm just a drunk

this may sound silly... i was a bourbon drinker... my friend kept trying to get me on Scotch. i refused.... (like a noob)

finally he convinced me that he was so sure i would love scotch, he decided to buy me glasses of JWB (he was piss drunk himself and felt like showing off how much money he could blow at the Chimes)

So after 2 or three glasses of Johnny walker blue, i became a scotch fan!

i was lucky to catch a good buddy piss drunk enough to buy me glasses of this, most people arent. But if you have some $$$ to blow and want to learn to love scotch, try JWB. very smooth

The better the scotch the more awful it tastes to me.

single malt runs the flavor gamut. This is a stupid statement.

And that's a rude one. He admitted he didn't know anything about Scotch or have the palate for its differences. He didn't categorically say it sucked.

Very true...they do vary
I like the more peaty single malts...The ones from the island of Islay are my favs...Lagavulin 16 year old is a go to...the Highlands, Lowlands, Spyside, Skye, and even the west and eat sides all have different flavors.

I absolutely love Balvenie 12yr. double wood. Not exactly a beginners drink but I second anyone who mention either Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. (sp).

If you like the Balvenie Double Wood do not try the Laphroig Quarter Cask. I find the QC to be excellent at its price point and later tried the Balvenie Double Wood, which I found to taste like crap. Was sorely disappointed by that bottle and would have loved to have my money back, then went back to the LQC and all was great again. My neighbor the scotch lover totally agrees on this point.

And I guess I think it is a stupid to have to learn to like something at 100s of dollars a bottle. Admittedly one that I will have to run the gamut on to find one I appreciate. Thanks but no thanks.

I have been offered and tasted 'legendary' scotches (per the Scotch drinkers I am routinely around) And I have come to the conclusion that I dont like them. What is so damn hard to understand about that. shite, half my friends spend thousands of dollars prior to hunting season to outdo each other. And to me (notice, I dont slam them) they dont taste good. So I stick with my choices and you stick with yours.

Or, you can just be an arse and call people 'stupid', that will show us.

Try and stick to the smoother lighter versions when starting out. Most of the Islay malts take a little getting used to. Definitely add a little splash of water. Hard to go wrong with the Macallans. Other smooth light single malts are Auchentoshan, Dalwhinnie, and 10 year old Glenmorangie are nice if you can find them.

Slainte!

My dad was a beer drinker but he acquired a taste for Usher's scotch. Do they still make Ushers?

Yes. He should have stuck to beer.

My dad used to sit in Fleur De Lis years ago with his dad and drink a shot of whiskey and a beer. Back then you could buy a pint of whiskey from the bar and keep it there. They would set up your mixer when you came in and set your pint on the bar. When you left they just put it back until the next time you came in. That was a long time ago. My father is 85.
