Rambo First Blood question

Why does the sheriff have such animosity towards Rambo at the beginning of the movie? He initially says something like:
"Wearing that flag on your sleeve and looking the way you do, people won't take kindly to you around here."
Did people on the west coast have something against soldiers and/or Vietnam vets? I don't get it...

Yes, there were some Americans fully against the Vietnam war.

I don't think the sheriff thought he was a soldier. I always took it to mean, that he looked like a rag-tag drifter, a trouble-maker just wearing a soldier's coat. People in that small "wholesome" town wouldn't like seeing a bum like that tarnishing the flag.
Or who knows, maybe it's like Saint said. It was meant to symbolize all the douche bags/animosity that soldiers had to deal with when the got back home.

This is correct IMO. Denny was perfect for the prick sheriff part.

Absolutely, and it wasn't just the west coast. People all over the country like anti-establishment types, students, hated the war and all of those associated with it. It wasn't like now, where even Bush haters support the troops. They were all looked at as the same by a lot of people during Vietnam.

read the book. it elaborates on the sheriff's motivations.

I think it was more of an "anti-hippie/drifter" thing and not "anti-vet" becasue there was alot of animosity towards hippies back then and people didnt want them in there towns.

I don't read no damn books, and I don't intend to start now.
Seriously though, what's it say?

The media greatly exaggerated the hate of the soldiers. The vast majority of Americans always supported the troops. The hate was limited to the stoned-out hippies and "college students"

pay attention everyone...they explain that it isn't the "hippie/drifter conclusion", what the part where he just fricked up the whole town and is talking about the war and coming back, and also when he first talks to his commanding officer over the radio in the cave...you will all get your answers there...

The rights to it probably aren't very expensive for some reason. That's why Shawshank is played two or three times every other weekend.

I was 14 when it ended. A lot of guys in my neiborhood served and some died. Zero protests there. The fricking war was won after Tet and Cronkite and the liberal media basically ended it.
It wasnt Nixons war and he let public opinion rule his decision.

They switched the location of the movie to the West Coast...it was Kentucky in the book. Wonder why they did that.
