My Playoff Bracket - Conference Champs

If I were God, or the US President, here is how I would do it. A playoff of 8 conference champs. You win your conference you get in, you lose your conference then its your fault. Everything is settled on the field, and sportswriters have no effect. The only issue up for debate is which of the non-BCS conferences makes it in, but I dont think that is really a big issue. All of the other teams (non Champs)can still go to bowl games, and it would only take 3 weeks to make this playoff work. Maybe drop a few of the bowls for the 6-6 teams...
This season, here is how it looks. The only issue is that Florida obviously is left out, even though they are likely better than some of the teams. But Florida didnt win its conference, so Florida cant cry about the system or the sportswriters. They are the ones that lost.
Doing it this way also still keeps all of the drama that surrounds the regular season, which is what makes Div1 Football so unique. It would also encourage better match-ups in nonconference games, since early non-conference losses wouldnt doom your National Title chances.
Conference Champ Playoff to decide National Champ, seeded by BCS rank.
1. Alabama - SEC
9. G Tech - ACC
3. Cincy - BigEast
7. Oregon - Pac10
6. Boise State - WAC
4. TCU - Moutain West
2. Texas - Big12
8. OSU - Big10
Conference Champions Left Out
Troy - Sunbelt
East Carolina ConfUSA
Central Mich - MAC

you need some at large. Wac and mountain West being equal to conferences like the Sec is ridiculous.

I recommend a 16 team system!

You are an idiot. Take away some bowl games for you to get satisfaction on what you want to watch. I can tell you that those 6-6 teams that win their bowl will be damn proud of it. And as far as the playoff...it'll be boring year after year. Conferences like the Big East, WAC, Mountain West will not have consistent teams to make the play off system competetive year after year.

Not a bad plan but personally I'd want the little guys in it just like basketball. The other football divisions do it with 16 so there's no excuse for the people with much more money tied up not to do it as well. Of course, I realistically do not expect this any time soon.

if he had that system I want Lsu to join the Wac or mountain west. Lsu would get in every year.

No, no, no. YOU are the idiot.
See what I did there.

Here's a quick one we did at work for shits and giggles.

A playoff like that would level the recruiting field. Good players would start going to the smaller conferences to have a better shot at getting to the playoffs. It would really make it a better game...obviously. Why in the world people explain a playoff doesn't work in college football but does in every other sport is...well...no words.

I think the first step that needs to be taken for the whole playoff thing is all conferences need a championship game or not.

or you can add 2 more BCS game. All those teams are already in the BCS games so it would just add 2 games between the 1st set of and the BCS championship. Then you could even still get the conference tie-ins a lot of the seasons as well as keeping all your darling 6-6 teams in their shitty arse bowl games that only their 12 fans will be watching. Much more interested in watching TCU vs. Boisie state if they are playing to move on in a tourney.

You people worry about nothing. The United States Congress has taken up this issue and is on the job. Everything will be taken care of by the government. Rest easy.

I am OK with a larger system, but it also brings in issues that my conference champ idea avoids.
The first, is that choosing 16 teams is inherently subjective. The 17th team will always complain. Based on my idea, no one can complain because its there fault they didnt win their conference.
Secondly, the larger the playoff, the more it destroys the old bowl system, which for better or worse has alot of tradition. The BCS already has basically an 8 team structure, so instead of playing BCS games it would by playoffs. Plus the more teams the more weeks are required.
Lastly, the more teams the more it makes the regular season meaningless. If LSU gets in with 3 losses, then who really cares about the regular season.
So, that is why I would go with 8 teams. Picking conference champs pits the conferences against each other which would have alot of attraction for viewers, and it removes all subjectivity. Also, who cares whether a conference has a championship or not. The conference can choose its representative however it wants.

Thats still much much better then the #3 team being left out. If your 17th your chances of winning the playoff is very very low

Is this so much better than the BCS? Bc now you have OSU and GaTech in the hunt, and these teams dont deserve it either. And who did Boise play this year besides Oregon? And since they already beat Oregon, why should Oregon be in?

Oregon won the Pac 10 the 2nd best conference this year

I agree that this point is the weakness of this idea. But Florida didnt win its conference, and thus is not better than Alabama. So, if we already know that Florida is not better than Alabama, then why should they get a chance to be National Champs. Do we know that Alabama is better than Texas or Cincy or TCU, or even Oregon? The answer I think is no.
Every system has a weakness, including the current system. I concede this weakness, which is glaring in the case of Florida. In previous years there are 2 or sometimes 3 teams that are clearly good but didnt win there conference. In my system they simply blew their chance. The SEC has a very strong method for choosing a champion, and I defer to that method.

What would you say if it came about that LSU played UF in the SEC Champ and won? The series for the year would be tied 1-1.

An eight team system is all you would need IMO. There are six major conferences (SEC, Big X, Big XII, PAC 10, ACC, Big East) that should get their champion in the playoff and then you take two at larges from the next two highest ranked teams in the BCS. Then use the BCS rankings to make your playoff bracket and use the current four BCS games as the opening round games, then two national semifinal games and the national championship game. This year it would work out...
Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Cincinatti are conference champs...
TCU and Florida are at large bids...
Round 1
Game 1 Alabama vs Georgia Tech
Game 2 TCU vs Florida
Game 3 Cincinatti vs Oregon
Game 4 Texas vs Ohio State
National Semifinals
Winner G1 vs Winner G2
Winner G3 Vs Winner G4
National Championship
Winners of the two semifinals
