In a combat situation, the Commander gets no second chance.

When a Commander screws up and causes a loss in a combat situation, there are no second chances.
The Commander is RELIEVED FROM HIS COMMAND and replaced without getting a second chance.
Hell, everybody in the Army and Marine Corps knows that, even in a peaceful stateside garrison, any brand new Lieutenant who gets a DWI in town can kiss his career good-bye. The Shavetail gets a written Reprimand signed by the General placed permanently in the personnel file, which guarantees NO promotion and discharge . . . CAREER OVER after one little mistake.
I guess things are a little different for the big boys coaching college football making 4 million a year !

Football vs. war?

OK, forget the battlefield analogy. What about the 20 year old Lieutenant whose gets kicked out of the service for ONE DWI? That happens all the time.
Why are you civilians so unwilling to hold people accountable for their frick-ups? All you are doing is encouraging the "frick-ups" to keep fricking up !

Miles didn't commit a crime. It was devastating to the LSU program, but not against the law. If your analogy were applicable to coaching college football, then Saban would have been fired after losing to UAB.
ETA: I don't want Miles here either, but this is just a stupid way to justify getting rid of him.
