I have watched this movie twice and still don't know what to make of the ending.
Anyone have any interpretations or thoughts on the ending?

Long story short:
Evolution - He evolved into a "Star Child" which you would have to read the book to get the full idea.
Somewhat of a good idea:

Not a complete analysis, nor the best. But definitely the best presentation. And long.

I have watched this movie all the way through, and I have seen pieces of it here and there many, many times. I don't know why I keep watching it, because it always leaves me with the same feeling. WTF?
It's dull, it's boring, it's long. It has no closure at the end. I like most of Kubrick's stuff, but this one is a mystery. And I don't care to "figure it out" either. I shouldn't have to read a book to "get" a movie; that IMO is stupid. Same thing I say for Apocalypse Now.

Why do you even care if you get it? It's simply a marvelous movie just to look at and admire the cinematography. And if you're like me listen to in 5.1 surround. It's an all out attack on your senses.
I get the movie just fine but even if I didn't like it it's a movie that I would watch just cause it looks great.

I've always liked this one, but I can understand people that think it is boring nonsense.
But I also liked Eyes Wide Shut which I am sure most people think is boring nonsense.

Just to get it fully. It was made with that in mind actually.
But, without the book it should be apparent that movie is about evolution. It starts with monkeys and ends with a giant baby in space, with the obelisk as the catalyst throughout the whole thing.

Kind of depressing that back then they thought we would be out exploring space by 2001 and yet we are still using the same shuttles from almost 30 years ago.
I'm still waiting for my damn Jetsons flying car.

Ive always had a question about the monolith, is it:
A) a "sentinel" from an alien species sent to observe the human race passively
b) An object whose energy actively causes these evolutionary steps to occur
C) somewhere in between.

The actual mystery of the movie... voila
Although, if I remember the book correctly it actually somewhat notions towards an alien origin.
I'd rather either the religious interpretation, or the symbolic rather than literal, interpretation. These are two separate ways to look at it btw.
I kind of have an outside theory of what the film might mean based on a few observations, mostly about other ways to look at it. Just another way to look at it, not necessarily valid or the only way.
I could make heads explode if I go on...yay

I thought Apocalypse Now was much more straight forward, and I don't think that reading the Heart of Darkness will really help explain much of the movie.

Some people on this board suggested I read Heart of Darkness to fully appreciate and understand the movie. I bought it, still haven't read it.

No kidding. I remember as a 1st grader reading a book about space exploration written in the early 70's that stated that by 2010, man would likely have a colony on the moon, and there would be a huge space station orbiting Earth with families living there.

I remember reading a Popular Science article in the late 80's about personal hover crafts. WTF is going on?
