according to the Times-Picayune restaurant writer.

I've been away from New Orleans too long to comment on his choices.

What say ye?
...................................................................................................................................................

quote:

Each fall, as The Times-Picayune restaurant writer, I taste my way through hundreds of meals to determine which of the many great eateries in the city deserves the distinction of being named one of the Top 10 New Orleans restaurants.

Deciding which restaurants appear in the Top 10 is always a hair-splitter, but they each shares common characteristics.

They are all white-tablecloth restaurants fulfilling high ambitions. They all either are owned by or employ a chef who is proving his or her -- or their -- mettle with cooking that reinforces New Orleans' reputation as a restaurant destination. They are restaurants that provide a singular experience with an ongoing commitment to first-rate food and service.

The spirit of the Top 10 is to recognize the restaurants that are performing at the highest possible level at this very moment.

Here they are:

Commander's Palace
1403 Washington Ave., 504.899.8221

Emeril's Delmonico
1300 St. Charles Ave., 504.525.4937

Galatoire's
209 Bourbon St.

Gautreau's
1728 Soniat St., 504.899.7397

Herbsaint
701 St. Charles Ave., 504.524.4114

Lilette
3637 Magazine St., 504.895.1636

MiLa
817 Common St., 504.412.2580

Restaurant August
301 Tchoupitoulas St., 504.299.9777

Ristorante del Porto
501 E. Boston St., 985.875.1006

Stella!
1032 Chartres St., 504.587.0091

I would say my top 10 is pretty close:

1.) Stella!
2.) August
3.) MiLa
4.) Commander's
5.) Cuvee
6.) Galatoire's
7.) Herbsaint
8.) Clancy's
9.) Gautreau's
10.) Pelican Club

Honorable Mention: Emeril's, KPaul's, Dakota...Rio Mar, Cochon, and La Boca are not far off either.
I personally do not think Delmonico belongs on that list. I really like it, but Emeril's belongs if any.

TA, you not a fan of Delmonico's or not a fan of Emeril ?

I have to say its one of the best meals I ever had (pre-Katrina). It was an increadable experiance all around.

I would say:

Emeril's > Delmonico > NOLA

I think the first two are certainly top 20...probably top 15...I just think the 10 I listed are better...Emeril's would probably be 11 or 12 for me...

I just went to Delmonico and it was very very good...all the waitresses were hot (which is nice).

3) Bayona
4) Brightsen's
5) August
6) Lilette
7) Commanders
8) Clancy's
9) Del Porto
10) Herbsaint

Just missing the cut are Gautreau's, Rio Mar, Cochon, Cuvee, GW Fins, Emeril's and K-Pauls.

Just my opinion.

why can a casual/cheap/dive spot never make these lists?

seems like often people crave a great, simple food more than these places and even many chefs will claim among the best food they have ever eaten was not in fine dining places.

I thought it was really amusing that Domilises, R&O's, Phau To Bay, etc. were in the Top 100...but Besh Steakhouse wasn't.

If we are including cheap eats I'd put Central Grocery at 3 and have everyone move down one spot.

True dat.

I've heard Emeril say many times that his favorite New Orleans restaurant was Uglesich's (when it was still open). It was the place where he always took his out-of-town chef friends to eat when they came to New orleans to visit. The best seafood platter (and one of the best meals) I've ever had was at Uglesich's.

when ranking "best" shouldn't everything be included? it says top 10, not fine dining top 10....but all of these lists automatically exclude cheap eats. Just seems pretentious and inaccurate.

Doing it by price point might be the way to go.

Tigre, I am working within the parameters set by the author of the Times-Pic story as written above. Take it up with him.

I agree. How about a list of favorite or most endearing restuarants?

Well, I know the Brown Derby is endearing to you also.

I finally saw that damn place the other day - I now understand what you mean!
