Wouldn't it be easy to look up their actual track times?

But aren't they breeding horses bigger and faster now than they were in the 60s? Sure he dominated other horses back then but there are a lot of athletes that dominated their sport back then that wouldn't even make a team nowadays.

I actually think Seattle Slew would take Secretariat by 5 furlongs.

I mean if you look at track and field athletes now and then there's no comparison, so it would stand to reason horses are faster now too.

Check sec's times though. Check the Derby record that still holds up.

Looking at how the times hold up, if I'm correct,
I'm pretty sure Secretariat's mile and a quarter split for the Belmont still would have won every Derby ever run...which is amazing.

Sham, the horse that ran 2nd in the Derby to Secretariat also went under 2 minutes...which would have also won every Derby ever run save for maybe the year Monarchos ran. So he did have decent competition. Sham was a good horse, just unfortunate enough to have been born in the wrong year, like Alydar.

I don't really think horses are faster today. Yeah, obviously there are improvements in tracks, shoes, diets...etc, but I think horses are more fragile today because they are being bred to get high numbers at sales, run a few races, and go to the breeding shed. Most big stakes horses today don't even run 10 races in their whole lives.

On another note, Secretariat was obviously a great horse, but if we are comparing horses from different eras...I think Man o War would have beaten Secretariat and Citation would have given him a run for his money.
