yea analog HD channels even if you have basic cable and just run the wire from the jack to the back of the tv. Its not to bad b/c you get all the nbc, abc, fox and cbs in hd and some randoms with it.

They also make digital antennas (like new age rabbit ears) that pick up over the air HD locals

nothing analog about them...they are "clear" QAM signals, basically unencrypted digital cable.

and conversely, there is nothing digital about those antennas. These are the same UHF and VHF signals people have been picking up for years. No need for a special "HD" antenna. I use a $3 antenna from Big Lots and get all the New Orleans locals.

listen to this guy.

fwiw, there are 2 *separate* digital tuners most tvs have these days:

QAM tuner = picks up the unencrypted locals HD channels on your analog cable line which *BY LAW* (not because comcast likes you) they have to provide.

ATSC tuner = picks up the OTA (over the air) HD signals from local channels that are again, free.

Bad news is its damn hard to find a cheap DVR that will let you record these shows without selling your soul to a sat or cable company to the tune of $100/mo.
