Everytime I jokingly say Who Dat in OK, half of the people think I'm referring to the Bengals. :

The Who Dey chant is first known to be used by fans of the 1981 super bowl contending team, but may have been used before that. The chant bears a heavy resemblance to the New Orleans Saints' cheer "Who Dat?" which originated in Minstrel shows in the late 1800s, therefore it is often times called a knock-off.

Source is wiki, so who knows

In 1983, New Orleans Saints fans adopted it during the tenure of Coach Bum Phillips. In 1981, the Cincinnati Bengals fans and players started with the now famous "Who Dey" cheer.

The phrase was widely used by Bengals fans in 1981. The phrase was widely used by Saints fans in 1983. A variation of the phrase was used by some Louisiana high schools and colleges in the 1970s and seems to have been used by some Saints fans in the late 1970s (probably a small number, and possibly a very small number). Is it possible that it was then copied and adapted by Bengals fans? Not clear. Did the popularity of the Bengals’ chant in 1981 lead to the wider adoption of the Saints’ saying in 1983? This seems likely, but also is not clear.

From a NYTimes article. Seems like no one really knows. Probably the most legit source on the topic.

During the Dome Patrol days, when the Saints really became identified with "Who Dat", I read an article that claimed the Alcorn State University (in MS -- Steve McNair's school) marching band was doing it in the 1970s.

The first time I heard "Who Dat" was about the LSU basketball team in 1981. Obviously that predates the Dome Patrol, but surely there are earlier sources than that.

Actually, it's been pointed out that Who Dat was started way back when.

But +1 on never hearing until I came to this site.
