Defense is not as bad as it seems

Washington got big yardage on:
The screen pass - sometimes when you blitz, it happens
Long pass at the end of the half - Eugene had good coverage, he just didn't knock the ball away.
The game ending drive - prevent defense at its best
Polk's long run - Defense got sucked in and out of position, just a bad play all around, no excuse
Yes, UW converted a lot of 3rd downs, but the LSU DBs were right there on a lot of those plays. Last year guys were running wide open all over the field. I didn't see that. I saw guys that were running a step behind, and with new players in a new scheme, that's gonna happen. It's gonna get better as the players get more comfortable in the defense. Also, Locker's mobility gave us fits as well. He's a very good player. He's gonna give a lot of defenses fits this year.
Now the offense...much more disappointing.

There's a good chance Washington's 2009 team would have scored 40 on LSU's 2008 defense.

Game 1. On the road. Inexperienced QB. A defense that was having a hard time stopping the opposition. This all led to a vanilla gameplan.

Key Stat was thier third down conversion and the fact that we could not stop them. We have won a Nat.Champ. without a great offense....much much harder with 0 defense.

While it's too early to tell how it will end, I can say that I remember Bo Pellini's defense starting out looking absolutely impotent.
Sam Keller absolutely shredded it. Look how far that defense progressed over the course of the season.
Only time will tell if this defense improves in the same way over the course of this season.

I saw a UW team rack up almost 500 yards of offense. That's not the result of a few bad plays. It looked like last year. Our dline got no pressure on Locker and our DBs didn't cover anyone. Peterson is the only stud on defense.
They have a ton of work ahead of them to improve or it'll be 2008 again.

This will be the worst defensive performance of the year.

There were a lot of bright spots (linebacker play, Peterson, Nevis, Downs, even Woods).
The inability to wrap-up is scary.

it is the 3rd down conversions that make you pull your hair out.

I'd like to know why no one is talking about Chavis' dumbass plan to keep the CBs 10 yards and safety at 15 yards off the LS. If he thinks that shite will work in the SEC we're in for some losses.

This UW team is going to be a lot better than people around here are thinking it is.

We'll find out in two weeks when they play USC.

It reminded me of the Bill Arnsparger days, when they had a bend but don't break attitude about defense. The routinely allowed teams to get near the red zone, only to get tough and stop the drive.
I didn't like it then, I don't like it now.
The defense should create field position for the offense.

Living in Tenn and watching them over the last 12 years this is something that has been a birden for U of Tenn in the past.
Pure talent on the part of some of the Defensive players was some of the difference in play.

Tackling was certainly needs to be improved. With better tackling there may not have been that gaudy third down conversion. In fact, if tackling were better, Washington's confidence could have been shot.
If Washington stinks up the rest of the season, our win will be questioned. If they have an above par showing rest of the season .. this win may look better.
What is above par?
4-5 wins. Since this team went through a few lean years they may not have personnel to play jacked up all season long. Wear and tear should show during later part of the season and will lose some close games.

No push from D-line & questionable linebacker play. Talent at both positions is suspect. We haven't recruited well at either recently. I am not sure if there is anything Chavis can do, but I hope I am wrong.

quote:Drake Nevis was in the backfield a considerable bit, esp in the second half. He was getting a push. Some of you guys are underestimating what a mobile QB like Locker does to your pass rush. It's very difficult to get to him without losing contain on the outside. We'll be ok.
