I think that it is an argument that is irrelevant until the end of this season. If LSU, Florida, or USC win the national championship this season, then that team is the team of the decade. If someone else wins, well, we'll cross that bridge if/when we come to it.

Why is it a consensus that the decade ends this year? When I count 10 years, I don't start at 0 and end at 9; I start at 1 and end at 10. So, shouldn't the decade be 2001-2010?

*shrugs* Personal preference, I suppose. Though, being it happens to be my personal preference, I suppose I'll defend it in that:

1996
1992
1995
1999
1990
2000
1991
1993
1994
1997
1998

Which of those looks out of place?

Florida has a better overall record and SEC record. Florida > LSU in the 2000's.

Yea, I guess most people refer to decades as "the 80s" or "the 90s" and that's where it comes from, so when we get to 2020, people will do the same thing, and it will be out of place to have the year 2030 grouped in with "the 20s." It just seems awkward to me to start the new century with the year 2000 when that's really the last year of the previous century.

You guys always suck me in on this!! Damn you! And I know you automatically disqualify SC because they don't play in the SEC, but okay here's the argument for SC...

USC did have a losing record in 2000. We finished 6-6 in 2001. Both arguments for not being team of the decade. However SINCE 2002:

2 NCs, with an epic loss to Texas
7 consecutive AP top 4 finishes
a Record 6 BCS victories
a Record 7 consecutive BCS appearances
a Record 7 consecutive Pac 10 championships
a Record 33 consecutive weeks as AP No.1 ranked team
NCAA's first school to have 7 consecutive 11 win seasons.
Coaches Poll voted SC either #1 or #2 in 5 out of the last 6 seasons.
28-0 record in November
18-4 record vs TOP 25 Competition (Best in CF. Texas is next 13-4, Florida is 13-12)
11-3 record VS TOP 10 Competition (Best in CF. Florida is next with 10-12, LSU 5-10)
26 All-American 1st teamers
53 Players drafted in the NFL
14 Drafted in the first round
3 Heisman winners

Also had a 34 game winning streak at one point.

Plus we haven't lost a game by more than 7 points since 2001.

That's pretty impressive.

They will be called team of the decade. If its USC that wins the NC this year, they won't really be team of the decade, with only 2 crystal balls. They'll be tied with LSU and Florida - as will any team which already has a NC in the aughts.

But if either LSU or Florida wins it all, it will be abundantly clear who the team of the decade is, and the media will just have to go frick themselves.

Best case:
LSU wins NC - LSU team of decade.

2nd to best case:
A team which has not won a title in this decade wins NC - LSu tied for team of decade with only Florida

3rd to best case:
A team which has won a title in this decade wins NC - LSu tied for team of decade with Florida and that team

worst case:
Florida wins. LSU has no claim whatsoever to team of decade status.

If you strictly use championships as the metric, UF is currently it. 2 BCS + AP trophies. Next, is LSU and USC with 1.5 championships a piece. Since I believe BCS trumps AP, I say the top 3 are:
1. UF
2. LSU
3. USC

Being a programmer, I start counting at 0, so for me, this decade ends with 2009. Meaning we have one final season to answer this question. If any of the above teams win the BCSCG this year, they'll be the team of the decade, because they'll have all or part of 3 titles.

If not, let's say: Bucknuts, Butthorns, Oklahomos or Semen-Holes who have 1 title a piece wins. Then they'll have 2 titles like Florida does and the debate is wide open.

If it's none of the above, then it goes back to the Gay-torz being the team of the decade.

The ap trophy isn't representative of an actual championship game win, it doesn't count. LSU doesn't have 1.5 national championships, it has 2.

Not all compute programming languages start arrays by default at 0.

Why would Oregon St. be baseball team of the decade? They won 2 and we won 2, in 2000 and 2009. And I dare say we have a much better resume than OSU in the rest of the 2000's also. So honestly, LSU could almost be considered team of the decade in baseball and football.

If LSU, Florida, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, or Texas win the NC, they're the team of the decade. If none of those teams win it (i.e. Va Tech, Bama, etc), then it probably comes down to which of UF, LSU, or USC has the best season. If two of them have similar seasons (i.e. both UF or LSU and USC win their conferences, and win BCS games), USC gets the nod. IMO.

If Florida, USC, or LSU wins it all this year, they will also be team of the decade. If none of them win it, USC is.

If your talking number of trophies then whatever, but for sheer talent, look no further than Miami 2001. We were pretty good back then too
