Best Way to Counter Offer

So if you are offered a job making say 58k, what would be the best way to counter the offer? Should you tell them that someone else offered you a job making 63k?

What kind of job is it? If its your first job out of college most companies won't give you a counter offer. it is what it is. DONT lie about another company giving you an offer, they will probably check.

I personally think this is a terrible strategy because you stand the chance of telling you to go with the other offer.
You should probably try to stress how much you want to work for them and go over the qualifications and strengths you would bring to their organization and tell them what you believe that is worth.

You can't just counter-offer. You need your backup. Tell them why you're worth more. If they give you more, great. If not, you have to decide if you can find more elsewhere. Oh and do NOT lie. The company will either tell you to take the other offer, or worse, they will check with the company that you said would give you more. If they find out you lied, they might make it hard for you to find a good job elsewhere.
Good luck!

In my experince, most companies have a range they are willing to pay for a particular position. They will almost always offer the low end of the range. If I were you, i would ask for 65K (based on your example) and like the other poster said above, provide reasons why you deserve that.
They will probably not give you what you want, but they may split the difference. If they say no then you haven't lost anything. Remember, an extra 4k up front on a 58k job is nearly 7%. Where else are you going to get a 7% raise for doing no work?!

Good luck with the counter offer, but as a business owner... I would laugh at you, tell you to take the other job and then not take your calls 6 months later
Oh yes, you will be calling back.

Are you just graduating or do you have work experience? If you are just graduating, then you probably don't have a leg to stand on. If some other company really did offer you more, but you want to work for this one, then tell them that. They may offer more. You just have to be prepared if they withdraw their offer altogether.
If you have more experience than what the qualifications for the position are, then I would think that it's expected that you negotiate a little bit. You might be better off asking for more benefits such as vacation, though.
