I must have built 20 Corsairs as a kid. I knew every plane and tank built during WWII and when they were introduced and their strengths & weaknesses. Yep, I've always been a geek.

I loved it too. Back before Robert Conrad became a parody with that stupid "knock the battery off my shoulder" commercial.

Harry O is an American crime drama series that aired for two seasons on ABC from 1974 to 1976. The series starred David Janssen and was executive produced by Jerry Thorpe

Janssen starred as the title character Harry Orwell, a San Diego cop forced into retirement when he is shot in the back. To support himself, he sets up a private investigation practice in San Diego. Henry Darrow originally starred as Lt. Manny Quinlan. During the series first season, the location of the series shifted to Santa Monica, California due to the high production costs of filming in San Diego. Quinlan was killed off, and Anthony Zerbe (who later won a Primetime Emmy Award for his role on the series) became Orwell's foil/contact, Lt. K. C. Trench of the Santa Monica Police Department.

I didn't realize that Zerbe was a late addition to the series. He was such a huge part of the show, I assumed he'd been there from the start.

The Thrilling Detective Web Site,

quote:

Harry O (1974-76, ABC)
By far the most requested show, and the most critically acclaimed P.I. show NOT to be available on DVD. David Janssen winced and grimaced and carried a world of hurt on his shoulders, and spoke some of the best writing -- in any medium -- the genre ever produced.

I found out just today that Janssen, incredibly, was not the first choice for the role. Instead, the producers first offered the role to... Telly Savalas??!?!?

Even if you like Savalas -- and he can be watchable in certain roles -- you have to admit he was all wrong for Harry O. Telly's a larger than life eccentric, not an everyman like Janssen.
