The old Tiger logo couldn't be trade marked. It was too generic and looked like too may othr Tiger logos out there.
Which is why the Athletic Department went to the new one. Since they had it created, they could trade mark it. It's just like the Geaux font, in that LSU is jealously guarding the rights to it.
If this happens, and this is the first I've heard about it, it would be about dollars and cents, not sentiment.

Do you have a source for this? I ask because it makes no sense. There are no other recognizable Tiger logos floating around that look even remotely like the circular Tiger head used by LSU. Feel free to Google Tiger Logo. Nothing even close pops up.
Also...does anyone feel like testing the "Can't be trademarked" theory and printing up a shitload of t-shirts with the circle logo on it and selling them without first consulting LSU?
A few years ago I started selling some t-shirts through CafePress and caught holy hell from LSU, and I knew better than to create anything using any immage logos used by LSU. I even caught hell for using a completely unrelated tiger image in conjunetion with the colors purple and gold...which I thought was bogus but decided to let it drop since I thought it was silly fighting with LSU afterall. But I question the copyright issue you brought up...
