Are we really abandoning the nickel under Chavis?

I kinda just figured Coleman would play the nickel position when necessary.

Didn't really run it last year. Putting a 3rd safety in instead of a CB isn't really the Nickel is it?

We aren't abandoning it. Chavis just doesn't believe in constantly rotating a LB out for a nickel back when the other team goes to a 3 WR set.

When we play spread teams like Florida/MSU/Auburn I'm sure we'll come out in a base nickel/dime defense for most of game.

That's why we moved a safety to OLB.

the two players that i know personally and hang out with a bit are really excited about the defense this year. and its not that "i dont know you so im gonna give you the grin and bare it bullshite no matter how much i hate whats going on" stuff...when they bring it up around me, i tend to believe they really think its going to work.

Just saying is it really much difference between Coleman staying on the field as opposed to what LSU did last year with McCray coming in with the Nickel? Pretty much LSU will run the Nickel as their base defense with Coleman at OLB.

I'm going to step down as armchair DC and let the Chief do his thing. He knows a shitton more about defenses and opposing offenses than I could ever know.

Atleast we won't see McCray on an island against Percy fricking Harvin this year.

I think Chavis knows what he's doing. I doubt the OLB (Coleman in our case) who covers the 3rd WR plays much man to man. Get ready to see a little more zone coverage than usual.

What WAS a mistake last year was Chad Jones and Danny McCray playing nickel/dime and manning them up with guys like Percy Harvin.
