When is a recession GOOD?

When a Dem is President. In fact, recessions are wonderful. From USA Today:

Do you own more than 100 items?
It's hard for me to count because 'sets' or 'collections' could be counted as one item.
If you walked into my house you would not describe it as cluttered with stuff except for two things. We've got over 5,000 books stacked in book cases against most walls. We've also got so many decorative throw pillows on the sofa and love seat that you can't actually sit on the couch unless you toss some pillows on the floor. This makes the dogs happy because they like to have sex with the pillows.

Political forum? The article is about consumerism and buying too much crap.. and how it is becoming less rampant. If you disagree, that is fine. You don't need to be offended by every single article that isn't about the overall picture of gloom and doom.

Other than the quote that the recession was a wake up call, where does it say that it was good? Finding the silver lining hardly makes something good. It just makes you an optimist.

Yes, but I do try to keep my number of items lower. After we did our trip around the world, we found that we didn't need all the crap we had. We only needed a few things, and preferred to spend our $$ on things we used fully. We switched from durable goods to food/liquor/eating out.

Our dog used to love to hump the pillow, now she is old and only humps her toys.

Look, frickbag. If I posted this on the poli board you would whine that it belongs in Money Talk. Shut up if you don't have anything to contribute.

Ah, you only read the headline. Read the article and ask me again if you really need me to excerpt quotes.

What breed is she?

Just an observation, but you seem to have quite the hair-trigger toward over the top hostility of late.
Everything okay old man?

i read it. I still don't get how they say the recession is good. Please educate me.

Sorry. But I really don't have much patience with people who tell me what board is appropriate for my posts. I'm the authority on that issue since I've been here so long. Do you disagree?

people are coming to realize they can live with less and their lives are richer for it," says Michael Maniates, professor of political and environmental science at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.
That is saying the recession is good.
quote:
A third, 32%, say they have been spending less and intend to make that their "new, normal" pattern; 27% say they are saving more and plan to continue, according to a Gallup Poll in April.
The recession is good because people intend to save even after it is over. They have changed their bad ways.
quote:
"People are feeling forced and inspired to get back to what is core to them," says Julie Morgenstern, author of Shed Your Stuff, Change Your Life. She says they're valuing objects less and experiences and people more.
"inspired" is good. "core" is good. Therefore, recession is good. BTW, I really hate the word "core." It's hippie talk.

OMG, this is so Mr. Van Driessen from Beevis and Butthead.

You have a different definition of good than me. This is finding the silver lining.

I think this statistic is quite revealing. I don't see a value statement associated with it to imply it was good.

Ok, this kind of implies its good.

Eh, this is a real trend. They are reporting on the trend. I don't see them spending the recession as good, just some silver linings.

I perceived your post as implying the article was an example of leftist media and its political bias.

So, the word "richer" in that quote would be applied if the recession were under a GOP administration? Really?

But I thought spending was good to get us out of recession. Now, saving is good because it keeps us in a recession but changes our lives. BTW, I'm a saver from way back due to a childhood in poverty. I just got bank statements today and went online to check CD rates. My largest CD which is at 3 mussent is now being offered at 1 mussent. It matures in Sept. My wife has an small account at a credit union that offers 2 mussent. I'm going to play these two banks against each other in Sept.

Where were these "silver linings" in the last quarter of Bush?

FWIW the guy you're quoting is a church pastor.

Economics and politics mix. Have you ever noticed that? I'm sorry if I was harsh.

Uh, yes. Do you have a point beyond that?

Yes, I think so.

I think this is where there is a split between this and the dems (and republicans) response. They want you to spend your way out of this. The reality, as the article points out, there is no going back to borrow and spend as a measure of economic growth.
quote:

the press was compliant in the bush/paulson push through of the various bailouts. That is where it was. They didn't question the bailouts, taking bush/paulson's word for it.

So, if the next president is a republican and the economy goes into a recession you think the NYT will say "It's Great!"
BTW, your dog sounds like a barker. I've been trying to teach my dogs not to bark but the wife is undercutting my efforts. It's always "Bark at Daddy..attack him...attack him!"
