The BCS vs Playoff Debate
Posted on 7/14/09 at 10:16 am

We were having this debate at work and it lasted a good solid 3 hours until our shift ended. The argument was split in half, 2 of us arguing each side. I wanan hear some more opinions...what you think?
Keep it how it is? 8 team playoff? plus 1 system?
I argued to keep the BCS as is, but change up the conferences a little (Add Boise, Utah, TCU, and ND to conferences)

I keep saying this, but with playoffs, you get the possibility of an all-SEC final.
That alone would make the switch worth it.

we have this. it is the SEC championship. why should you have to win the SEC twice to win a national championship?

thats true but isnt that what the SEC championship game is for? I wouldnt have wanted to see Florida Bama play again for the NC

Plus one. An 8 team playoff would take too much drama out of the regular season IMO.

i agree...a 3 loss team should have no argument to even compete for a national title
a plus 1 system wouldnt be bad but i like it how it is

We almost had that a few years ago with the Ohio State-Michigan bullshite. Thank God Florida played in it.

The current BCS system with a +1 is the best idea I've heard so far. It doesn't modify the current system much and gives the top 4 teams a shot at the title.

I'd like to see this:
10 team playoff (top 2 get bye)
Get rid of league championship games
Use the BCS ratings to determine the top 10 teams
And for those that say a playoff diminishes the regular season, I'd argue just the opposite. With only 10 teams in the playoffs, each game would be crucial for teams to either stay in the top 10 or jump into it. The drama would be sick.
Hell, keep all the other bowl games. Noone pays attention to them now anyway.
A 10-team college playoff is my dream format. It's beauty is in its simplicity but because of TV contracts and league commisioners I'm afraid I may never live to see it come to fruition.

Nope. What about the #1, 2, and 3 teams towards the end of the season, especially if they don't have to play a conference championship? There would be little or no drama there.
With the plus one format, if you lose, you drop out of the top 4 and are out of the playoffs for the time being. The same can't be said for an 8 or 10 team playoff.

Maybe with #1-#3, but everyone would be too busy paying attention to #4-#15 to see if those teams would fall out or jump in. In the current format you get 5 teams at most that have a chance at the end of the year. In a 10-team format, this could affect upwards of 10 teams trying to make it in or doomed to fall out.
Come on now, 10 teams, winner takes all, move over march madness, this would be electric.

But do you really think all 10 teams have a shot at winning the national championship? You're comparing this to March Madness, but upsets in basketball are much easier to pull off than upsets in football.

If there had been a playoff that year, it would have been LSU vs Florida for all the marbles.
And I would have liked our chances in that rematch.

Hell yes, the top ten teams in the country? You may get your rare Utahs or BYUs, sure, but the majority of the time we're talking about LSU vs. Ohio State, USC versus Florida, Alabama vs. Texas, Oklahoma vs. Virginia Tech. This would be spectacular.
Edit: And we may finally get a chance to see the SEC vs. USC.

I agree that some of those matchups would be fun to watch, but we'd probably get the same ones through the plus one format. My point is that now, every single game matters in college football. Even if you're the #1 team in the last week, you still better beat the shite out of whoever you're playing, or you could get bumped out of the championship game. The plus one format would keep that intensity.

Good banter--I have to go--All I'm saying is that all this talk about loss of intensity in a 10 team playoff is way overstated and way underthought--teams would be clawing to make the top 10--and with 10 teams able to get in, you double the number of teams that are still significant at the end of the year--as opposed to the plus one. I'm telling you, it would be nuts. Just pick a dream bracket and let your imagination go wild.
Thanks for the honest debate, though.

Exactly what part of that is simple?

The order I'd like it:
1. +1 (not a 4 team playoff. Play the bowls under their old formats, [such as Pac 10/Big 10 in Rose, Big 12 in Fiesta, etc] then using both the reg season and bowls, take the top two teams two weeks later in the NCG)
2. Current BCS
3. 6-team playoff. Would create no legit controversy (would shut every critic up). Rewards the 1/2 with byes. The best way to do it is to move up the season a week (I know this wouldn't go over well with you guys down south, but it's really the only way it could work). The week after the final reg season/conf champ games, 3 plays host to 6, 4 plays host to 5. Then 1 hosts the lowest seed the next week, 2 hosts the other surviving team (so neither the first round nor the semis are at a neutral site, but the NCG will be). After the first two playoff rounds, you can award the Heisman, and do bowl selections, with all teams besides the two teams in the NCG. Then do the bowls and NCG like now.
4. 4-team playoff. Basically, same as 6-team playoff above, but one less playoff round. 1 hosts 4, 2 hosts 3.
An 8 team playoff or more, though, would be TERRIBLE.

And you quadruple the number of teams with arguments to be in the playoff. It would be a messs. You think teams whine and bitch now? It would be much worse under that type of system.
I like your enthusiasm, but to come up with a plan that could actually work it is going to be complex and take more thought than "it would be cool, so they should do it"
