President Bernard Machen filled out a US News & World Report survey, asking him to rank all the major universities in the USA according to a 5-point scale: (1) distinguished, (2) strong, (3) good, (4) adequate, or (5) marginal. Here are his rankings of the SEC schools:

Distinguished: University of Florida

Strong: Vanderbilt (also Tulane, fyi)

Good: Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina

Adequate: Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, Tennessee

Marginal: no SEC schools

In ranking the University of Florida as "distinguished," he has it ranked ahead of the University of Chicago (strong), Georgetown University (good), Notre Dame (good), Johns Hopkins (strong), Dartmouth (good), Cornell (strong), Duke (strong), Penn (strong), Brown (good), and the University of Virginia (strong).

With LSU in his "adequate" category are others like Samford (not Stanford), University of Alaska, University of Colorado, American University, Howard University, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Ball State, Indiana State, Wichita State, Louisville, Louisiana Tech, UNO, Louisiana-Lafayette, Central Michigan, Wayne State, Jackson State, Montana State, UNLV, Seton Hall, New Mexico State, St. John's, East Carolina, North Dakota State, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Kent State, Oklahoma State, Clemson, Baylor, SMU, Texas Tech, Houston, BYU, Old Dominion, VCU, West Virginia, and Marquette.

With his own school, Florida, in the "distinguished" category are Stanford, California-Berkeley, Yale, Harvard, MIT, University of Michigan, Princeton, and Columbia.

I am guessing this is for academics. Well as long as LSU has TOPS and cannot increase it's tuition we will never be above adequate. Whenever our politicians believe LA has too many schools and LSU deserves the most attention then will go above adequate.

I am pretty sure LSU gets the most attention already.

UF academics>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LSU academics

distinguished? No.

LSU adequate? No.

I'd give LSU a good at 3 and UF a 4.

Just bein real.

The fact Ole Miss is ahead of LSU is beyond laughable.

It does, somewhat. When we quit funneling dollars into useless 4-year universities (read Nicholls, Southeastern, NSU, Grambling) then LSU might have the resources to become a top tier school.

I read somewhere once that, per capita, we have the most 4-year universities of any state.

Hi is correct about LSU and incorrect about Florida, but Fla is better than LSU....and I graduated from LSU undergrad and law...as most of you know LSU's rep does not really extend beyond the state line.....

No shite. At best Ole Miss is at the same level as LSU. Tennessee might be misplaced as well, but I'm not too familiar with them.

The guy just lost any cred. He did not check "dont know" for any school. Not one. No one in charge of a major system like UF, has the time to "know" the quality of every university listed.

Like he knows enough about the Univ of Alaska - Fairbanks to make a judgement. His board needs to start a replacement search because hes not to be trusted
