Before people call him a bust they need to read this article. He was still an above .500 pitcher (78-70) with a 3.91 ERA during the start of the steroid era. He was on his a way to a 20 win season when the strike hit (he had 14 wins with 12 starts left). Injuries did him in. Too many pitches from little league through college.

Nolan Ryan was quoted in the Houston Chronicle as saying (paraphrased) that this idea of pitch counts was overblown and that it caused pitchers to NOT fully develop the arm strength needed for a major league season.

Ben had a good article metioning that college pitchers had a few picthes wtih them. He felt Skip used him a bit too much. However, its college baseball and he knew that he would get thrown out. I think its the biggest negative to college baseball these days vs. going in from HS.

First time I've seen you insult Skip without calling him a money-grubbing Jew.

If I my memory is correct, the Baltimore pitching coach would only let McDonald throw three pitches - fast ball, curve and a change up.

A major league pitcher without a slider is a disaster waiting to happen. Most major league hitters can hit a good fast ball. By not letting him add to his repetoire of pitches had a lot to do with his bad stats.

Well, Dr. James Andrews disagrees with Nolan Ryan. The number of arm surgeries in kids these days is WAY up due to overuse per him.

I wouldn't call anyone that won 78 games in the Major Leagues a bust. There have been too many guys that didn't even make it to the bigs.

Ben was great but I'll never forget that grand slam that he surrendered to Stanford in the CWS.

Good article, except that it says Denham is now 12 miles west of BR. When I left ten years ago I didn't have to cross the river to get to Denham.

Ben was great and I'll never forget that time in the regionals at Texas A&M when he won the first game of the regional, then pitched 7 innings to win against A&M in the championship round with LSU coming out of the losers bracket, then came in relief to win game 2 and send the Tigers to Omaha. Texas A&M was 55-3 before that day and had only one loss at home all year.

Please...you'd be lucky if you knew Ronald McDonald.

Denham is not 12 miles west of BR like the article says. It is 12 miles east of BR. That's why I didn't have to cross the Mississippi to go between the two.

You are partially correct. The Baltimore pitching coach, Dick Bosman, would only allow the three pitches you named. Ben had a cut fastball that he used, but NEVER threw a slider. Not all MLB pitchers throw a slider, some just can't throw it well enough. He had an unbelievable split finger that the O's thought was hard on his elbow.

And I would not say that his stats were bad at all.
