Have to go to Birmingham tomorrow... any good casual dining options.... I've researched some places, most of the good ones seem upscale and I don't feel like dining upscale by myself. Staying at the Sheraton downtown and have never stayed in Birmingham.
Also any recs for the road... Hattiesburg or Meridian along 59. I'm gonna try Crescent City grill in Hattiesburg I think... I have the dude's cookbook New south grilling, which I like.

wow..
not sure what you are looking for..
for Greek/lebanese, there are two places that I'd recommend
OH!! there's a good Jewish Deli not too far out of downtown. Casual and very tasty. Max's, I think. I can look back because I posted on it for the SEC tourney
hang on, I'm still thinking...

A lot of people from the hospital where I work really like a place called Surin downtown, I've just never been.

another place that's getting a lot of play on the sports talk radio here is called Sweet Bones Alabama, but I can't give it a personal recommendation... can't get past the name!!

Sweet Bones is just another chain clone in the Summit at I-459 & 280.
I spend half the year traveling between BR & B'ham. The food is so dismal I eat at chains most of the time.
Hattiesburg:
Leathea's BBQ on 98
Wintzel's Seafood on 98 also, a few blocks away, both within 10 minutes in traffic from I-59.
Meridian:
Chains
Laurel: Don't even stop to take a piss unless you're packing.
Tuscaloosa: Yawn
Birmingham: I've gotten bored with all the halfway decent places, it is 98% chains. I generally bring something to cook at my daughter's house.
Alabama makes Iowa look like a gourmet paradise, the Gumps don't give a shite about food and it shows.

Milos
My son-in-law summed up Milo's for me "it's greasy, not as good as Wendy's, but we grew up with it, so we eat it".

that is funny..
one thing Milo's has going for them is their sweet tea...that stuff is killer

The ony thing worse then Birmingham restaurants is the night life and both are crap. As far as restaurants, you can either eat at a chain, or go to a over-rated Bar-B-Q restaurant. I would try to help you but there is not a place that I would feel comfortable suggesting knowing that you probably know what good food taste like and are fooled, like the gumps, into eating the crap they serve here.

I do like the Hot and Hot Fish Club, but it's pricey.
Also, Milo's is better than Wendy's but still not great.
ETA2: Go to Full Moon BBQ.

I like Nabeel's for Greek. Get the Greek burger. Very good (Homewood).
Chez Lulu is decent and has a great atmosphere (Mountain Brook).
While you're there check out The Blue Monkey (bar, very cool).

Birmingham has about 40 times more chains than restaurant row in Monroe
Good restaurants around the summit.
