Russell Shepard Question

I understand the dude is a talent but here is the question.
Would redshirting him a year actually help him as a QB?
Pro's- He would bulk up, work on what he is weak at, learn playbook.
Con's- Did not work out well last year with Lee, would waste his talent and the extra dimension he could bring to a game.

I don't think you 'waste' anything by redshirting a guy. I think you 'waste' a guy by not redshirting him and only give him a couple touches a game.
Personally, and I'm probably not in the majority, but I think it would be a good think to redshirt Shep unless he can fill a major hole as a slot reciever. We already have too many backs to spread the ball around too, and subbing him in for Jefferson really doesn't bring another dimension to the offense in my opinion.

Yeah I mean the dude looked good in spring practice and has some rave reviews. But he is not facing anything other than vanilla offense. He is not in heart of SEC competition yet and thats where the true test will come.
For all the LSU QB's not just RS

If someone is going to be at your school for 4-5 years it pays to redshirt sometimes. If you think they're only going to be there for 3 years, then there is no point.

Well is RS a 3 year QB with potential in NFL or is he a 4 year QB who can be a great college QB. There is a difference, Gino T from Miami is prime example.
RS needs to bulk up we all agree with that at least. Moffitt probably has him on program to add 10-15LBS of muscle.

This question is moot because there is no way he redshirts, if only because of the message it would send to other elite recruits.
Having said that, I dont think he should redshirt for 2 reasons:
1. You should only redshirt if there are better players than you at your position(s). Right now, you could make an argument that RS may be our 2nd string QB after fall camp.
2. He is a game-changer with the ball in his hands right now. No matter how they plan to do it(direct-snap, handoff, or pass), when LSU gets the ball to RS he is a threat to score. Why would you leave that on your bench for a whole year?

Five Star talents usually don't get the luxury of a redshirt.

I doubt he is 2nd string QB, but he is a play maker in other area's. He is an athlete that can hurt you in multiple ways.

RP disagrees, so does Mark Sanchez among others that can be listed.
But you said usually so your right they dont usually get the luxury. But that does not mean it cant be a good thing.

He was in the Spring Game. And that was with only spring practice under his belt. Once he gets 2-a-days and the fall practices under his belt, one could argue that he will only solidify being #2.

He won't be red shirted, but he probably should, esp. if he wants to play qb. RS and JL will be the two main qbs and Shep will get in for a couple of plays each game. Shep would be better served to red shirt. This would allow him 2 full yrs to be the starter as opposed to 1.

He would have to beat out 2 players with starting experience. But this is getting away from the original question. Not gonna turn this into a RS vs JL vs JJ thread.

with more reps, and more playbook study, shep could be the #2 by the end of fall.
he's already more than likely going to get more touches than lee even at this point.

As far as mobility Jefferson and Shepard are not in the same league.

Sure it would, but if he can help the team this year you have to play him. Also, I would be he was told during recruiting he would have a legit chance to play or maybe even he would play some and not redshirt.
With spring practice and summer workouts he's way ahead of a normal freshman and will see the field. If he was coming in in August then it may be a tougher call.

I agree. It is more accurate to compare Shepard to Holliday, except Shepard can pull up and throw the ball.

Se I dunno, I mean maybe LSU just wanted to showcase RS at spring game since he is an attraction. Maybe Lee has a better grasp of offense than we believe. We are not on LSU coaching staff so its fun to make assumptions.

All we can do on here is make assumptions and legit guesses. That's what a message board is all about. Fun debates. Having said that, I seriously doubt that LSU coaches would take away reps from their #2 QB to "showcase" another player. I mean I suppose it's possible. I just don't see them doing that. I think Shep was the #2 in the spring.

Shepard will probably have a similiar role Tebow had his FR year. He will play a "hybrid" type position.
Posted on 5/12/09 at 7:32 am to SouthEndzoneTiger
I could see them, I mean hell its a Spring Game not even a real practice. They are going to give fans what they wanna see. JL/JJ could be running first/second string and RS could be running some second string cause he will probably play in wildcat or some of those plays that RP was showcased during NC year.
I mean its obvious he is going to play so obvioulsy they need to have him take reps with first and second string on the occassion.
He is probably going to play many positions this year, he is still only 190LBS so still would probably need 25 more pounds before season started.
