Why did the Bucks trade Jabbar back in 1975?

I was looking into this recently and really wanted to find out why the Bucks traded away Jabbar. Did they think what they got in return was so much better? Was Jabbar not getting along with the team? How could they not have seen this guys potential?
From Wikipedia: On June 16, 1975, the Bucks pulled a mega-trade by sending Jabbar to the Lakers for Elmore Smith, Junior Bridgeman, Brian Winters and David Meyers. Jim Fitzgerald, the Bucks largest stockholder, opposed the trade and wanted to sell his stock. Although Fitzgerald was the largest stockholder, he didn't own enough stock to control the team. The trade triggered a series of events that led to a change in the team's ownership.

I have always wondered that myself.

shite! I even read his auto-biography 'Giant Steps' years ago but I don't remember the reason Jabbar gave....not that players always tell the truth in their books

Money, is the only answer. Oscar Robertson had retired and the team needed draft picks and money.

No. Getting the highest-profile NBA superstar back in Los Angeles where he could play for one of the two marquee teams in the league was the only reason.
Nobody in their right minds would trade players like Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Wayne Gretzky. And they both wind up in Hollywood. Hmmmm
But, hey. "It's in the best interest of the league."

Kareem wanted to get into acting. He had won a championship in Milwaukee and was in his prime. Had to be monetary.
Then again, NBA trades don't make sense. there's rarely an equal for equal.
look at the trade the lakers made to get the #1 pick in the 79 draft (Magic Johnson for Gail Goodrich and reserves).
Or the Celtics #2 pick in 86 (Len Bias for Gerald Henderson)
We've seen it in recent years with Gasol for Kwame(?)

Goodrich was traded in '76 - 3 years before the Magic draft
Henderson was traded in '84 - 2 years before the Bias draft

By the way, The Bucks finished 38-44 in Kareem's last season there, and Winters, Smith and Bridgeman were pretty solid players based on their stats. There were reasons for the trade.

"Live in Milwaukee? No, I guess you could say I exist in Milwaukee," Abdul-Jabbar said in a early magazine interview. "I am a soldier hired for service and I will perform that service well. Basketball has given me a good life, but this town has nothing to do with my roots. There's no common ground."
Bucks fail

That might explain it.

I guess it might be as simple as that: Jabbar wasn't a huge Milwaukee fan. Still, interesting how it's tough to really pinpoint a reason why he was traded.
