If you go to that teams website they'll usually tell you what time gates open to see batting practice, etc.

you won't see all of batting practice...the home teams usually hit before the gates open
or they're in the middle of it when they do

Make sure it's not the last game of a series. Typically, the visiting team doesn't take long batting practice when they are traveling. Sometimes they don't do one at all. I'd get there just after 5.

Most teams open their gates 2-2 1/2 hours before the game. The home team hits BP first, and is finished about in about 1 hour, the visitors get about an hour as well, and the last 30-45 minutes to get the field ready (chalk lines, etc.).

Usually the home team is wrapping up BP when the gates open. Be prepared to see some serious bombs. I am amazed every time I watch a MLB team take BP.

The Ballpark in Arlington used to open their gates at 4:30. I'm assuming they still do. We usually caught the tail end of Rangers BP and all of the visitors.

Get there for the game that was played the night before, find a good hiding place, and you'll see everything.

Saw the Braves in the early '90s and it was a show; Justice, Klesko, Gant, Lopez, and Francisco Cabrera. The most amazing was watching Tony Gwynn. He would hit the first pitch over the bag at third, next one in LC power alley, center, RC power alley, over the bag at first, then he would do it again in reverse order. Each round he hit he would start over and continue until he finished hitting these spots. It was truly a sight to see and he hit every single ball on the nose regardless of where it was pitched. Yes it was BP but you realized you were watching a PRO.
