Mainieri answers Coleman pitching at Georgia

Also,
quote:
When Louis started warming up, it was 5-0 and I wasn’t comfortable with where we were, because the Tulane game was fresh on my mind,” Mainieri said, referring to an 8-7 loss to the Green Wave on Wednesday, when the bullpen faltered badly and threw extra roadblocks in an LSU comeback that fell a run short.
Louis was already hot, so I can’t have him warm up again. It was either use him there or waste him and hope we got enough from everybody else.
Then he goes out and takes charge of the game and gets us to the ninth in good shape. The way Georgia came back late made me confident I made the right decision to bring Louis in when I did.
Also,
quote:
The Tigers’ up-and-down bullpen was a man short because sophomore Daniel Bradshaw was struck on his right (throwing) elbow by a foul ball in Georgia’s first inning and was ruled out for the night.

I posted this last night when the someone else showed that Maineri had said this
People need to understand that in many situations in all sports that coaches are aware of more factors than the fans are (injuries, player abilities, etc).
For the record, I never agreed nor disagreed with Coach Maineri's use of Coleman, I just started arguing the fact that a bullpen is not nearly as taxing on an arm as pitching in a live game situation.

Now that makes some sense. Thanks Padge1. I didn't hear the game Friday until Coleman was in with a 8-0 lead. To me, this has been the most informative post on the subject.

i don't know, it really looks like Coleman puts too much stress on his elbow to have any longevity. Trust me, I know...I ruined by elbow pitching in HS. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

Skipping through what I am sure is a pee pee contest...
How about this? Let Coleman be used in an as needed role against god-awful Tennessee when they come into town in two weekends. Let him have that series as a counterbalancing rest. Thoughts? Or am I now an idiot too? Or...perhaps I have always been?

To have a guy like Coleman whose delivery puts high stress on his elbow throw 150+ pitches in one weekend just isn't a good idea. Even if it makes tactical sense, you're just begging for something bad to happen. It's straight out of the Dusty Baker school of pitching management. It worked out well this time, but I wouldn't really like to see it again.
