Down 20% as of 11 am. I bet it gets in the $1-2 range by the end of the week.

Anyone going to buy it up at $2 or less? Many people have already stated that they will not fail.

Even if GM somehow survives, what would the risk be that shareholders get driven to zero with more government money infusion?

define short term? IMO it's a zero in the intermediate term.

This is the first time that Obama has discussed Big 3 bankruptcy as a real possible alternative, rather than as something we mus avoid at all costs.

Who in their right mind would buy a GM vehicle right now?

Just curious, but if one is looking for a used car and you like the styling..why not?

For that matter..why not a new one?

The prospect of fewer places to get your vehicle serviced means higher cost to car owner, longer waits, reduced quality, etc.

Plus, I can't imagine that the people that are manufacturing the new cars are in great moods...I am guessing corners are getting cut, quality is suffering, etc.

Even if none of what I just typed is true, the perception has to be out there...

The fact of the matter is that there are alternatives to GM and those alternatives aren't in the news every day like GM has been...

I seriously doubt that auto repair shops are going to simply stop working on GM vehicles.

As for the quality control slipping; it's certainly possible, but I haven't heard anything about it before now. Interesting take though.

You don't think that any of them will go out of business?

I mean, some will because it's a down economy. But I don't think it's going to be that big a deal. Right now there are like six repair shops within aabout an eight minute drive of my house. If that number drops to four, I may be slightly inconvenienced, but not really.

And acording to Obama GM warranties will be backed by the FF&C of the US government. I happen to think this is an awful policy, but there you have it.

Dealerships? Sure. People who can work on GM vehicles? There must be 30 in my little town.

One reason quality may not slip is that the line speed at these plants are probably as slow as possible. The workers probably now have 2 minutes to mount the screws of the "OH @^#%" handles.

What about parts? How available will parts be for GM cars? There is talk about many auto part suppliers going out of business...

And will these small independent repair shops be able to honor warranties? I wouldn't know...

Quality at the GM plants right now should be higher than ever. They know they are in the media's eye everyday and on the verge of failing completely.

Chicken, I wouldn't put too much stock in how you hear about them everyday and not other companies. You know the media will keep reporting on them until something new and exciting comes up. It's just the hip thing right now.

Even if half of the service stations go away, there are still many GM shops out there. If they're smart, most will start to train with the imports now, but you will not see people having to drive two counties over just to get service.

My concern would be disgruntled employees sabotaging cars, but I seriously doubt that is happening with unemployment the way it is. I know some people just don't care, though.

Chicken, the import manufacturers share many of the same parts suppliers as domestic companies. If they start going out of business, you will see it affecting the entire industry, not just GM and Ford.
