Drove by a concentration of new car dealerships today

did not see one customer with a salesman looking at anything. These dealerships were all non-domestic and domestic brands.

Then why don't they cut their prices? I've got a bunch of cash and am ready to buy. But I don't see any drastic reduction in prices.

i have no clue why there hasn't been a dramatic price drop with the extremely excess supply

We went to a Honda dealership today to buy a Fit for the older stepdaughter, and it was full of people. We were actually surprised, we thought it would be dead.

I've been looking at a 2001 Honda Prelude with 70,000 miles on it at a local dealership for weeks now for my teenager. Those idiots want $10495 for it. I go back each week and they are rock solid on that price. Will not budge. I know they didn't give anymore than 6K or so on trade. Thats what KBB says its worth on trade in. Every car i've ever traded in they used the figures given on KBB. When you bring that up to the guy he says "KBB also says retail is $10,400". WTF? So you're saying its just coincidence that your numbers match? I says "KBB says you only gave 6K for it". He says "Oh we don't go by that". I say frick off for the 5th time. I hate fricking used car saleman.

I am beginning to think some of these dealerships are so stubborn and the salesmen have such huge egos they would rather go out of business then sell for largely discounted values.

News reports say people are still buying cars. Just sticking to more reputable cars. Probably why the Hondas, Toyotas, etc. have kept their value so far.

3 weeks and counting.....still waiting on a call back from both Brian Harris Chevy and All Star Chevy. Told them both EXACTLY what I wanted and that I was ready to buy before month end (Feb).
I'm damn tired of hearing all their belly aching about how bad business is when they won't get aggressive and sell a car.
At any rate, bought from a private seller anyway. Got a much better deal I'm sure.

That’s just fricking stupid, for a car that’s nearly ten years old with 70k miles on it. I saw a 300z on Florida for cheaper than that. Most used car salesmen are scumbags, when I was buying my current truck (paid for now thank God) the salesman quoted me a price then asked me to put a down payment, then when I left the down payment he sent the purchase order from the bank for the full price, neglecting to take out what I had already paid there by increasing the price of the truck. I got him back though, I know they ate at least 4k in loss on the trade in.
Then to top it off they called me three days later asking if I had kept the cd player face plate from the car. I told them no, the idiots had left the car unsecured in a parking lot right off a main highway. FWIW I had to get screwed two times previously before I learned how to properly buy a car.

But Honda, Toyota, etc have all asked the Japanese govt for bailouts due to slumping sales in the US.

My older car is a 2003 so I could run it another year or two. I think I'm going to go four or five dealerships, pick out a car at each and tell them what I'll pay for it. Then give them my cell number and see if anyone calls by the end of the year.

Used car prices are not falling like new car prices. In fact I've read some people who suggest that used car prices are rising as more and more people are deciding they can't afford new.

Good plan. Have you thought about trying dealerships in really bad off areas? I know you are retired, so you have the time.
Call up the detroit dealerships, vegas, FL, and say this is what I want. I will pay cash. I will pay X amount. Then fly and pick it up, and drive it home. I wouldn't do california, as they have extra regulations that bump the price of a car up.

That sounds like a really good idea. I want to go buy one of those $18,000 houses in Detroit and drag that sucker back to New Orleans while I'm at it.

The smaller town dealers are struggling. I work for Louisiana's #1 selling GM dealer. Our numbers are pretty close to what they were last year at this time. We are pumping out right around 100 new vehicles each month.
For you "know it all's" who say the deals aren't good right now you obviously don't know the market.
Also, whoever made the comment that car salesmen are liars, thieves, etc. have no clue how much work and time these people put in.
The days of chocking someone's trade, holding gross profit are over. Dealers are making there money (SFE dealers) on volume and bonuses. The market is way to competitve to "Steal" someone's business.

The average consumer is an absolute idiot evidenced by some of the comments in this thread. Several people have asked why dealers arent drastically cutting prices since business is slow. Do you think what the dealer payed for a car has changed along with the economy??? For the guy that was bitching about the prelude; they want a certain price for it , you think its to much.....dont buy it. They arent ripping anyone off. They own the car they can sell it for whatever the frick they want for it. Its called capitalism. Chances are they loaded up in that trade to to make another deal happen. Perhaps it was traded several months ago when the trade value was much higher. Perhaps it had engine problems that they didnt catch on to when it was traded in and it had a 3k dollar shop bill. Quit going by the dealer and bitching about the price being to high. Just dont buy it.....If a consumer pays to much for a vehicle it is there fault not the dealers. They didnt get ripped off, they didnt get the best deal THEY could have......
