I'm liking DC Chavis already. He says he's bringing his SAM strongside LB position to our defense, where he uses safety-sized LB's, including ex-safeties, at the strongside LB position.

This to me is the first step in improving our defense against the spread offenses. The spread has turned ordinary LBs into dinosaurs. Look at the LSU-Florida game. Our LBs were too slow to fill the gaps that Raines was hitting, too slow to cover RBs out of the backfield and slot receivers and TE's dragging across the middle, too slow on blitzes and no where to be found on the option.

Against spread teams I'd like to see The Chief go one step further and replace all the LBs with hybrid safety types. You don't need 240 lb LB to stop a power running game, that's not what the spread does.

I'm not a big fan of tweeners. More often then not they end up being too small to play LB or too slow to play S.

Who are some possibilities here? McCray, Jones, Coleman, Baker?

Chad Jones will play free safety, if he moves up, it will be like LaRon did versus Arkansas, not in a base package.

I would think Coleman is going to get a serious look. Also Baker. Maybe someone off the radar.

We aren't playing against pro-sets anymore. Everyone is trying to replicate Florida, which will necessitate getting much more speed on the field.

I am so relieved to hear Fairhope Tiger approves of Chavis and his SAM LB philosophy. We can all sleep with nothing to worry about now.

Did anyone notice how Florida's spread offense went to Tebow when it really counted against Oklahoma late in the game.

We won't have to worry about Tebow after next year.

Smaller, speedier LBs may help against UF but may hurt against teams like Bama and Ole Miss who like to run off tackle. I like it against the spread and passing situations where the LB can either drop back or blitz. They will struggle against the better run-blocking tackles and tightends though. Fortunately both Bama and Ole Miss have some OL turnover.

Auburn '04 had small LBs and they did o.k.

Yeah, everyone assumes it will be an ex-safety, because Chavis sometimes converts safeties. Baker fits the description of the position really well with his size/speed.

That may work vs Florida after Tebowe is gone. Which Tiger Safety would like to see meet Tebowe in the line.
