What is your opinion of Loomis?

This thread is a response to to the many threads questioning inaction in the FA market.
My opinion is that he's handcuffed with a salary cap problem and had no chance to go after a top flight FA; he's forced to shop for bargains.
Considering how little money the Saints have, we might be better waiting to see who is available in the draft and those who get cut before the regular season. Mistakes were made with Smith and Grant and we're paying the price now.

Loomis is doing fine with what he has. Everyone wants big names at every position and that just cant happen. Our biggest FA aquisition is Greg Williams. Top that with Vilma and keeping the O Line in tact speaks volumes to the front office. I do think we will sign a safety or draft one, we just need to be patient. Im just like everyone else in waiting for the next big name to come across the board saying we signed them but also know these guys are doing their best and weighing all options

When he first started I considered him an idiot. Now I realize he is not a full fledged head honcho type GM. He is a bean counter than relies on his staff for personel evaluation. He moreless outlines the budget and balances the financial part of the team, kinda the "how" of operations. The coaches control more of the "who" of the team and work in concert with him. This has been made very clear with the differences of two head coaches.
The cap and draft pick situation this year I don't have a big problem with. There are times when it is a window of opportunity to push and other times more of building mode. I think we are in the middle of an opportune time so some of the push moves are okay. How they pan out is the question. This should be a contending year. Another .500 or losing season could have both his and Payton's job in jeopardy. This is the win now NFL as evidenced by the coaching turnover this winter.

Jason David is gonna make the pro bowl this year and Charles Grant is gonna lead the NFC in sacks and I'm gonna give all the credit to Loomis.
what? It could it happen right?

Ok, I heard of drinking the Kool-aid but you must be drinking something alot stronger than that....

That he created himself. There was absolutely no reason to overpay for Grant like they did, especially when you know that means you'll have to overpay for Smith the next year.

Personell moves are per Payton, not Loomis. Loomis trusts his coach and scouting staff, so blame them for the decision to sign Grant and Smith, and for the decision to trade for Shockey.
If you're going to point fingers and make a scape goat, at least be accurate.

yeah, I didn't really feel like getting into the Loomis debate so I figured I would throw out some outrageous claims.
but how awesome would it be if David became a stud in Gregg Williams system?
Gregg Williams the Miracle Worker

Yes, but the bean counter controlling the purse strings should keep them from over paying. Who else was going to pay Grant the kind of money he got from the Saints? We got suckered on that one because we thought with Grant we had a shot at the SB, but without Grant we'd have a hole in the D to big to overcome. IMO we could have kept Grant for less, or if he left it wouldn't have been the end of the world. I put that on the whole FO, not just Loomis, but I would expect Loomis to reign in the money side of things a bit more.

The market dictates the value of a postition, not Loomis. His personnell men told him that Grant's worth it, and he did the contract. The contract wouldn't have been bad if the player lived up to it. Problem is, he didn't, and we all knew he wouldn't. For some reason, the personnell men and Payton thought he would.
They're all at fault, but some more so than Loomis.
I am just getting tired of people laying the blame at his feet, and this love affair with Payton prevents them from holding his feet to the fire.

Hindsight...
Bottom line is that Grant was worth his new contract at the time it was signed. He has fallen waaaaaay off since then.

he's supposed to be a cap guru, so this sums up my opinion of him

structuring the contracts is on loomis
he wasted $8M in cap room (maybe more) last year that we could use this year

grant has had MAYBE one season that justifies that salary...you generally pay guys that money who consistently produce those seasons. smith is in a similar situation, but he has more pass rush potential (but he's too big now)

as of now, payton = haslett

nope
he signed his deal before the 2007 season
2005: 2.5 sacks in 16 games
2006: 6.0 sacks in 16 games
BALLA

wasn't he getting like 10 sacks/season before that?
And, if i'm not mistaken, he was franchised so they would have had to pay him big bank for at leat one season anyway.

he got 10.0 and 10.5 sacks the year before that
sacks aren't everything, but you don't make a guy who just came off 2 seasons averaging 4 sacks/year top 5 money

they should have dealt him and gotten a lst if we were lucky, or an early-mid 2nd

Isn't this a contradicting statement?
My biggest problem with the Grant deal has always been the legnth of it. 7 years is too long for almost any NFL player.

not really
the ability to get sacks is how you get paid the big bucks, but you can be a good DE if you don't get sacks
...you just won't get paid
you can get bigger DEs who don't pass rush that well for much less than what we're paying grant
hell trevor pryce was 5/25
we'd be in a much better situation had we let grant walk and if we had signed pryce
