My husband and I will be near Birmingham next weekend for our daughter's softball playoffs. He loves a good cigar...can anyone suggest a nice cigar bar? Also, any restaurants worth checking out?

can’t help you with cigars but b’ham has some awesome restaurants

La fete and tiny town are two we’ve enjoyed very much. Also the best beer store I’ve ever been to (hop city)

Where exactly near Birmingham will you be? As far as like cigar bars, there isn't much near downtown unfortunately. Couple of smoke shops and stuff but not really great places or in great areas. Vitola is a cigar shop in Mtn Brook village that has a smoking lounge in it that i'm sure they'd let someone out of town chill in if they wanted. If he grabs a cigar there, plenty of good patio options to smoke it at as well though. If you guys are going to be out in like Hoover or something though, that may have some different options.

I'll reguarly take a cigar and sit out on a patio at some of our breweries and things or at Hop City, but there isn't much in the way of a dedicated smoking cigar bar.

Restaurants:
Bottega Cafe
El Barrio
Dyron's
Automatic Seafood
Armour House
Helen
The Battery
Bettola
Bayonet

Those cover a decent array of more upscale dining and casual options. I generally advise people if they have one meal, bang for your buck go to El Barrio downtown and make an evening around it. Get their queso for sure, I add chorizo but personal preference there. Their Carne Asada is phenomenal, but can't go wrong with any of their entrees, Chorizo meatloaf is another of their staples. I also may be the only person ordering it, but their Pozole/Pepito dish is delicious too.

While you wait for your table or when you are done with dinner, there are multiple great bars within a block or so you can walk to:

House of Found Objects (right next door) & probably most unique bar in Bham
Adios - Has been nationally recognized recently
Collin's
Sloan's
Bygone's (a little farther away but really good).

For a little more country dive/college bar feel, Neon Moon isn't far either.

These are great, thank you! We're actually going to be in Alabaster/Calera, but she will be with her team when they're not playing, so I figured we'd check out Birmingham.

Gotcha. I don't know a ton of stuff down that way. Hoover has a cigar place called Cigars & More in the Patton Creek area that is really solid. Wouldn't be as far of a drive as coming all the way towards downtown, if he is just looking for somewhere to chill for a little bit during the day or something before heading out for dinner somewhere.

I asked the board a similar question back in the fall. We ended up at:

Bottega Cafe for lunch (highly recommend)
Dyron's for dinner (highly recommend)

You should get reservations if possible.

Bottega Cafe doesn't do reservations just fyi (the fine dining side does), but there is a good wine bar/small plate restaurant across the street called Freddy's that is very good and usually where we go post up while waiting for a table if a bar seat isn't available. Highly recommend getting Bottega's coconut pecan cake if you go there.

What was called in the past? The Atomic or something like that?

Different bar, but same owner. He did the Atomic on 1st ave which was more of a 60's themed cocktail bar vs House which is more 70's themed. Closed down when he and his wife who were co-owners got divorced.

Then opened up House of Found Objects on 2nd right next to El Barrio. Wasn't originally planning on doing so, but the space opened up and was too good of a spot not to. Very similar vibes to Atomic though.

There's a place called Cigars and More off of Hwy 280 in Hoover. They have an excellent cigar selection, and although they are not a standard bar they do have a nice smoking lounge area and have a limited selection of bourbons/whiskeys that they will pour for you as well.

I'd do the Patton Creek one over the 280 one if they are going to be over in Alabaster. I think it may actually have a small bar in it, can't remember.
