A friend from my hometown passed away this week, and I searched his name on google to see if there was any other info on him. What I found were several fake obituaries for my friend. Some of them actually have his picture, but some of them have odd pictures in them. Like one had a stock photo of sherrifs at a crime scene.

I did not know that this was a thing. I guess people have bots that scrape websites and social media for death announcements, then auto-generate fake obits and articles in an effort to generate a little bit of add revenue?

What a fricking bizarre world we live in.

Reminds me of the many YT vids titled "Last Words of [celebrity that is clearly still alive]!!" I don't get the appeal, or even the point, of these

There are apparently bot farms in India churning out all these AI vids by the shitload. They all use AI narration so as not to reveal the Indian accents

Is that why they do it? How much money are we talking about?

Whoever controls the ad revenue business in this situation should be mandated to police this crap.

It’s one more drip in the ocean of lies that has produced our low trust society.

I would imagine not much individually, but when there are thousands, the money probably gets pretty big.

Sort of unrelated, but I had a friend pass away and some scammer put out a fake ad for a donation in her name. Her mom went on the news to expose the sick shite.

I couldnt find the real one either. Had to get someone to send it to me. Then I had to vet it to make sure it was indeed the real one.
