Sat by an irrigation lake Sunday to get some photos of an Osprey that likes to feed there. The Osprey did not show up but the herons were doing a little fishing. I have taken several photos of herons with fish but this one looked pretty cool with how he barely grabbed the fish so the whole fish was displayed perfectly like he was showing it off. Herons are one of my favorite birds to photograph just because of how wild the feathers look when they are all fluffed up like in some of the photos that JoJo posts.

Like it was nothing.

Then stood there posing.

I cannot grab a bream like that.

Like a bar of soap.

I think about that a lot how hard it is to hold a fish and a bird will just grab one like it is nothing. Nature has that figured out pretty well. Not on the same trip but this Osprey grabbed a fish that was actually pretty big after he got it out of the water the fish never moved again. If I had grabbed it it would be flopping every which way.

When I fed the bluegill at my lake by hand, the local heron would stand right next to me like we were long lost pals. They have no problem taking down a large fish that appears to be impossible for them to swallow.

There's a Mr. Miyagi lesson in here somewhere.

There is a blue heron nest site on the property behind me. They nest in large groups in the tops of some very large trees.

Some evenings they will circle before coming to roost, there will be 20+ herons, circling like buzzards. Its a pretty neat thing to watch.

Once they land, they start cutting up and making all kinds of racket. I had no idea they were so vocal. They can be heard from hundreds of yards away.

They pretty regularly get 1.5# flounders in front of my house. they get them down. Quite the site. I saw one eat a 1-2# bullhead cat once, that looked like a chore. I think he waited until it died so the fins didn't get him. That cat lived a long time out of water. I used to have some cool pics of one eating a 2' eel.

I watched a heron snatch a chipmunk off a fallen tree in the water and drown him before swallowing.

Bet that wasn't how that monk thought he was going to go.

There was a hen wood duck swimming around with about 11 just hatched little ones and a female Northern Harrier showed up. Didn’t want to wish ill will on the the baby ducks but I was ready if she wanted to grab one. She had that look in her eyes.
