13 has no redeeming qualities at all. Horrible game with the worst character in video game series history (Hope). I did enjoy 13-2 though. As for the rest of my rankings I hate action combat in a final fantasy game so 16, the most action oriented one and the only one with no party members gets 2nd worst. 1-3 I think are self-explanatory; fun games but barebones stories and still better than 16 and 13. 15 and 12 are low because they aren't turn-based although, again I enjoyed those two as well. I have always considered 7 to be incredibly overrated although it is objectively a great game.

For the top 3: 8 was the first final fantasy game I remember playing so it has a special place in my heart. I love the story although it is the game most in need of a remake to fix the level scaling nonsense where it is better for you to not level up the entire game. I don't mind the junction system. 6 is one of the greatest games ever made and would have easily been #1 if 9 didn't exist.

In general all of the games outside of 13 and 16 I have enjoyed with the series having a few of the best games ever made in my opinion.

This is how it is for me with X. It's the only FF I played as a kid. All the rest I've played as an adult, so no bias

My VIII over VII will be a hot take but I thought it aged so much better and the story was so fricking whacky and all over the place that it had a certain charm to it.

From what I've read, VI and IX could contend with X as my favorite

I gave up on them after the PS1 era. Didn't like the direction they were going. I preferred when the tone was mostly swords and castles and not like steam punk, modern shite. The tone began getting way more anime/weird Japanese shite and less medieval fantasy.

FF6 is my personal favorite
FF4 also great.
7 is good but obviously overrated.
1 is foundational to the JRPG genre but obviously very basic by modern standards.

I played through 5 once and don't remember it all that much.

9 is likely only good one I never played. I own it and it's sitting on a shelf in my gameroom waiting to be played one day.

Final fantasy 6 is an glorious achievement in gaming and still holds up today.

7 is a strange one for me. The OG 7 i actually would probably put lower on this list. i never did get the hype for this game. its not bad dont get me wrong, but i dont think its particularly stronger than other titles in the series. i really think it just benefited from right time right place phenomenon. Remake was great though. Rebirth was ok, borderline bad. I almost want to swap 15 and 7 on my list.

16 was a good game, but its hard to call it a final fantasy game since its moved so far past its roots.

Haven’t played 2, 3, 5, or 6.

I get that 8 has its flaws and the junction system is broken but it was my 1st FF and I absolutely loved it. It’s more of a nostalgia thing. I even refused to play the remaster because I didn’t want to ruin the memories I had of it as a kid. It’s such a weird story but I was so immersed in it and it felt like real “fantasy” and was so creative.

Kinda embarrassing I haven’t played 6 as it’s widely regarded as the best one
