Taylor Sheridan Shows. I Just Lose Interest.

Don't know what it is about his shows in particular, but I am really interested for about a season and a half, and then I just don't care to watch anymore. Nothing really happened to turn me off the shows. No favorite character died or anything like that, but it's been the same for Tulsa King, Yellowstone, Landman, et al.
Maybe it is that as the stakes are raised the characters become less nuanced and more caricature -- like the characters feel more real and developed in episode 1 than episode 12.
I don't know. Anyone else get the same feeling?

So does he, so it all works out

He's the straight white country version of Ryan Murphy. It all looks amazing and starts out great then he just decides to full retard the thing

For me it’s usually the bad casting that causes my loss of interest, especially the women actors. They’re below Hallmark quality.

The first two seasons are usually the best. I am not sure if Marshals is his or not, but it became horrible on the first episode.
His shows are generally better than others.

He knows how to set the table brilliantly, he doesn’t know how to deliver a four course meal though.
He jumps the shark via various absurd, never ending scenarios and situations that just repeatedly blow the mind for how absurd they are.
It gets tiresome after two seasons of his shows.

His movies are better than his shows

Victim of his own success
His initial efforts are so good that he skipped up to a level with zero pushback or input from anyone else so there’s no one there to tell him to share some restraint or take his foot off the gas when writing his shows.
It’s like a populist version of Sorkin dialogue where you can really feel him getting on a soap box about whatever he’s thinking about, without the quippy walk and talk style
His first screenplay, Sicario on the other hand, had an excellent director to guide it into shape, who took out a lot of unnecessary scenes and dialogue from BDTs character from the original screen play to make it into the end resulting movie
I think if he went back and paired up with strong willed directors as a writer, or even took up directing in movies, the quality would be much better than his shows, because the format itself is its own level of constraint. But I think that ship has sailed

I guess I'll be the outlier and say TS is one of the best TV showrunners/writer currently. Is he perfect? No. I like that he's at a point where he doesn't have to bend the knee to the studio suits because he's printing money on just about everything he creates and they leave him alone.
Most shows are done by committee and you have a lot of crap out there.
I love TS big landscape scenes, solid music scores and his frick-you to big city culture.
The Madison, which is a female-centric show may be some of his best work.
As I said, he's not perfect and certainly does things that I'm not fond of but his projects are better than most.

He just has trouble with multiple lines and long form shows. His movie scripts are tight and well paced but he’s a singular idea guy which is why his shows start off with good ideas and initial stories but they spin out past one arc.

It's because he's a feature film writer and not a television writer and he's now Almost totally creatively shot due to too many projects. His concepts and ideas are very good, and his A storylines are usually extremely good for one season or so, but his B and C storylines are always dogshit filler and his shows should be 2-3 hr films instead of 10, 1 HR episodes.
He chose the money. I'd don't blame him, but he is not a good TV writer. He's an excellent film writer though.
You just go into every one of his projects knowing 2/3 of it will be absolute shite and the shows will only be decent for 1-2 yrs.
It would be great if someone edited down Landman to just Billy Bob and his direct encounters into a E HR film. It would be great

I like Tulsa King best but I know the scenarios get dumber and dumber.

Surprised you lost interest in Landman already. I can’t wait for Season 3.
Landman and The Madison are home runs.
He’s sending a message to Hollywood with Landman: if you don’t want conservatives to watch your crap, fine. I’ll take that audience and make millions.
With The Madison, he’s flipping the typical narrative that makes anyone living in flyover states dull and unenlightened and showing coastal folks how people in flyover states actually view them. He’s touting their lives as meaningless because they’re so disconnected from themselves, others, and the rest of the country.

Marshals is pretty weak. Horrible acting.

Once he writes himself into a show and turns up as a shirtless, badass savior character (like in Lioness), I’m out.
His ego is massive and he’s surrounded by yes men.
His shows would be better if he made them as a limited series. Season 1 of Lioness, Yellowstone, and Landman were all decent. They went off the rails in Season 2.

He just seems like a huge douche and it shows in his work now that he’s the man
As in he can’t help himself from douching up the shows because that’s exactly his personality.

Agree. One of the best things about TS shows is that it may be the only media the wife and I can watch together and both enjoy. This show in particular was a home run in that regard. Some of Kurt Russell’s dialogue about the difference between men and women to his wife is almost verbatim some of my rants to my wife about why I love the outdoors/hunting/fishing etc.
After we finished the season, my wife’s first comment was “I need to make a better effort to enjoy nature with you.” Not going to lie, that was awesome to hear.

My God if I have to hear another hyperbolic antidote from backwards-cap special forces dude.
The dialogue in this show is way over the top.

I like Tulsa King as well. Sly carries the show, but the plots are almost satire now... Dana Delanie looks horrible on screen, and her acting in this show are terrible. The black dude dressing all thugged out this past season wasn't believable. I did kinda like Garrett Hedlund's character. He's a little more serious/believable. Neal McDonough is good in anything he's in.

TS doesn't do a lot of interviews and he recently sat down on Tom McCutcheon's THE SHOW for a little over 90 minutes with some cowboys to talk about everything he's doing and how he made it in the business.
You get a pretty good idea how have the "sausage" is made in TS's style. He's got some good stories.
I was a little surprised he's not involved in the Dutton Ranch aside from his name being on the show. Hope you enjoy.
