Looking for some of the must-do attractions and drives around the park. Lodging will be in the Canyon Lodge area. Any other suggestions are welcome. The trip will be in the last week of September. Any good dining options as well?

Dining or even just procuring any sort of food in that area is terrible, but that's pretty much the whole of the park. The only decent in-park dining seemed to be the Teddy Roosevelt Lodge and the Yellowstone Lake Lodge.

Other than that, just try to see as much as you can see and use waze/google maps to monitor traffic conditions in places like Lamar Valley, where most of the wildlife are congregated.

What is your general trip plan? Arriving from where? Leaving to where? How many days?

You generally need 2 very full days to see the park, the roads are essentially in a figure 8. One day to see the lower loop and one to see the upper. Then any additional days I'd use for hikes, highlights, etc.

Bring binoculars. Borrow a spotting scope for your vehicle if you can.

I would highly recommend an evening in Mammoth if you can't stay the night there. The elk come into the village/ town, and that's the Elk rut. We stayed in Gardiner and the Elk were rutting all over the towns. It was like a tv show.

Hard to go wrong with any of the attractions. I've stayed in Canyon Lodge and there are food options right in that collection of stores/parking/lodges. The food was overpriced cafeteria food but that's about as easy as it gets in a NP.

We walked back to the room after a long few days of hiking and as soon as we turned a blind corner on a sidewalk around the lodge, big arse bison WAY too close. Luckily it didn't care, but we slowly backed away and snapped a few pictures. Just keep in mind the wildlife will get all up in the lodge areas.

I would try to lodge a different area each night where you are exploring the areas between lodging instead of just staying at Canyon the entire time. Driving around the park can be a massive headache when wildlife is involved.

We got stuck in a buffalo parade, but were luckily the 3rd vehicle in line going at the parade. The traffic behind parade must have been stuck there for hours.

We did it in a RV and stayed at Grant, Madison, Canyon, and Fishing Bridge Campgrounds. Madison and Canyon were awesome. Fishing Bridge was the only one that had hookups was the worst to me and the most expensive. Mosquitoes were awful. There was plenty of Grizzly view opportunities around it though.

My advice for figuring out what you want to do is find a really detailed map of the park and start following the figure 8 of the main roads and also look at the exits from the park and just start marking what you want to see by looking at the places through google image search.

Why you need to look at the exits is there is stuff like Lamar Valley which has the wolves and great wildlife view and goes up to Beartooth Highway for incredible views.

Madison exit goes to West Yellowstone.

Mammoth exit has the big castle gate and all the hot springs around Mammoth.

Jackson/Teton exit for the Tetons.

Exit to Cody is a great place for bear viewing

There is just so much you can do and see in the park, you need to prioritize and research the crap out of it to figure out what you want to see and do.
