Preferred bank for LSU student?

My daughter is going to LSU in the fall of 2026 and we need to open up a checking account for her.
I use Metairie Bank for most of my banking.
Main use of this new account would be to deposit 529 money into, for us to put spending money in from time to time and for her to use for other daily things.
She has a Chase credit card tied to our family account that she will have access to.
Question is - is there a bank that would be better suited for this than if i were to open up a Metairie Bank account? I'm reading Campus Federal and Hancock Whitney, but does it really matter in these days what bank the debit/checking account is tied to?

Prioritize low or no fees, accessibility, and being able to use ATMs everywhere
Some of the online banks will cover all ATM fees
You should also consider having her get her own credit card to start building credit rather than just having her use yours

If there is an occasional need for branch access, JPM Chase is much more convenient than others. They just opened a new branch near Burbank and Lee Drive.
Most banks gave ATM’s in the Union.

I added her as an authorized CC user when she was born and she has a card in her name. I did this on recommendation at the time to start building credit.
You are saying to get a totally separate CC for her?

See what is in the Union. I think Campus Federal had a branch there around 2013.

We have used Hancock Whitney since I was in high school and thru LSU (early 90s) Still use them now and our daughter is in Alabama and is using them as well. Never had a single issue.

Gotcha yea that works for that purpose. She’ll need her own card at some point though.

You should probably challenge her to do it on her own rather than doing it for her. Same for the bank account

I’m assuming OP’s daughter will go more places than just the union

I used Campus Federal when I was a student because they had a union location and I wasn’t very mobile to get to places off campus. Seemed fine

She isn't old enough to be growing hair out of her ears, and she probably doesn't have a vending machine business on the side, so there isn't.
OP why not just keep/open her an account at Metairie bank? The debit card they issue, with a MC logo, surprising as it may be, can even be used overseas, not just in da parish. And then you can go and argue in person about "unauthorized charges" at the Bulldog.

Campus Federal is also a credit union co-op member so a member of any other co-op credit union can use them for basic banking.

With foreign transactions, most do incur a fee at most banks. Capital One had a great advantage when their debit cards were branded as Mastercards with no foreign transaction fees, but now you are lucky it will work overseas now they transitioned their debit cards to discover. I guess there is a reason why it is called a discover card, you get to discover places that actually accept. While in the US, it is something like 98% acceptance rate by merchants, but overseas it can be a real pain in the arse even though it can be processed as both a Discover Card or a Diner’s Club card.
